The tension in the car was thick as they sped through the streets, the only sounds were of panting as they tried to calm their breathing from their run.
River pulled into a Walmart parking lot and turned off the car. He turned in his seat to make sure he didn't see anyone following behind them. "We good?"
Ryan nodded. "I didn't see anyone following us. I think we're good but we'll wait here for a few."
He turned to look into the backseat.
Quinn was folded over in her seat, her head resting on her knees and her body shaking.
"Quinn.....you good?" He asked as he reached out and touched her shoulder.
She jumped, sniffling.
Ryan glanced at Wyatt. "You good?"
Wyatt nodded and blew out a long breath. "Let's never do that again."
"That was too close." River spoke up. "Can I just say.....that that was probably the scariest thing we've ever had happen to us. Quinn?" He turned in his seat and frowned as he heard sniffling again. "Is she okay?"
"I think I'm going to throw up." She answered, her voice muffled against her knees.
Wyatt reached down to the backpacks they had thrown onto the floor and unzipped the cooler, pulling out a water. "It's not very cold anymore but...." He said as he held it for her.
She unfolded and took the water. "I need some air." She said she climbed out of the car.
The boys watched as she walked around the hood of the car to sit on the parking block in front of them. River's hand went to the door handle and Ryan stopped him. "Give her a minute. Let her have some space."
"That could've been way worse." Wyatt said softly. "That scream.....that sounded gnarly."
"Do you think that was a person? Like someone getting sacrificed?" River asked, his eyes wide at the thought.
"Don't know." Ryan kept his eyes on the front of the car in case Quinn stood up. "But I wasn't going to wait around and find out. Who knows what could've happened? All I kept thinking about is if they caught us.....and Quinn."
"Yeah." River whispered and then sighed. "I'm going to check on her." He opened the door and rounded the car, seeing Quinn still sitting on the parking block. "Hey." He said softly as he sat down next to her. "Are you okay?"
She sniffled and shrugged a shoulder. "I don't feel like I need to throw up anymore."
"That's good."
"And I've already planned twenty-six ways to kill you three...."
River laughed.
"Four of which are legal under duress in most states, I'm pretty sure."
He laughed harder. "That's fair."
Quinn sighed. "I've never been that scared in my life. I thought we were going to die."
"It was intense." River nodded. "But you know we would've never let them hurt you."
"There were six of them, River. You guys aren't superheroes."
"Don't tell Ryan that."
She laughed and shook her head.
River wrapped an arm around her shoulder and pulled her closer to him. "You think you're ready to head home now?" He asked and stood.
Quinn nodded and picked up her water bottle. She looked up to see Ryan's hand in front of her and she smiled, letting him pull her to her feet and into a hug.
