— 020. back to december —

DYLAN WOKE UP WITH an empty stomach and slight headache as she packed up a few things in her duffel bag. she was too tired for all of this and she hoped conrad had a good reason pulling this kind of stunt.

as she stumbled downstairs she ran into belly tying her laces. "ready to go?" belly asks quietly. dylan knew they were still off after their disagreement last night. she just replied with a short nod as she opened the front door.

as they sat on the bus they kept receiving messages from steven so they came up with what to say to their older brother.

FOR THE MOST PART dylan was silent most of the bus ride. she didn't wanna speak with belly so the only thing keeping her occupied was to think. but she could only think of one thing. that night. that night that haunted her. not in the way that susannah's death made her heart ache.

but in the way that she felt almost ashamed of the way she acted towards him. towards cam. she remembered it all too well. as if it had been replaying ever since they broke up. cam had come to her house unexpectedly.

he never did that. he'd always check in with laurel to see if it was alright. but that night he just popped up. dylan was laying in her bed as the doorbell rang. her being lazy, she waited for someone else to answer and that's when she heard muffled voices.

she then heard her mom say something along the lines of "go ahead, she's in her room." then a few heavy steps were heard as a soft knock was placed on her door. dylan didn't really wanna talk to anyone.

she had just gone to see susannah that day by herself. she never went with belly because for some reason she just knew belly was afraid to see susannah fading away. and steven would go most times with their mom so it was nice for dylan to go alone and lay in annah's arms uninterrupted for hours.

she sighed as she spoke up. "come in." she says softly. her face sort of lit up with happiness as she saw cam enter. but then the smile spread across her face faltered as she noticed he wasn't smiling at all.

not even a slight upturn in the corner of his lips. nothing in his eyes but regret. but what was it he was regretting? they hadn't even said a word to each other. but it was all echoing in his eyes.

everything he wanted to say, buried deep in there, wanting to stay hidden. "hey dylan." he says as she sits up. "hey cam." she says. she didn't know what his deal was. he was acting weird.

"why- why are you here?" dylan asks confused as he takes a seat at her desk. "uh, i wanna talk.. with you. to you." he says as she moves to the edge of her bed. "ok, go ahead." she says surely.

"dylan.. i know you've been... struggling with susannah and everything." he begins. "and i think- i think i wanna give you time." he says as dylan lets out a soft confused laugh. "what?" she asks as he lifts his head.

"i don't want to, but i think we should take a break." cam says. dylan's heart twisted "what do you mean a break?" dylan asks with a laugh. "i mean, we need time apart. for you to figure things out." cam clarifies.

"a break isn't time apart cam. because a week or two is a break. and a break means we're still committed to each other. and that you'll still be there for me. so is it really a break?" dylan asks as she tears up.

"i don't know." cam says softly. "you don't know? you don't if you're breaking my heart right now? you don't know thinking a break will help is making it worse?" dylan says, her voice raising a bit.

"dylan i need you to understand me-." cam begins. "no i need you to understand me! i have waited for you all that time, regardless of what you did to me. now i'm finally happy cam, with you." dylan says loudly cutting him off.

"dylan you're not getting it. i want what's best for you." cam says, trying not to match her voice level. "why!? why do you suddenly want what's best for me and think this is it?" she yells as he huffs.

"because i love you dylan." he says sternly. "if you loved me you wouldn't leave me like this." dylan says as she wipes a few tears. "dylan i do love you. i want what's best for you no matter if you think i do or don't." cam explains as dylan walks around her room, trying to hold back tears.

"dylan, please-." he begins. "get out cameron!" she yells at him. "what?" he asks confused. "i said get the hell out!" she yells once more, her voice breaking as she holds in a sob. cam got up. then he left. he left without a word.

she could hear her mother trying to ask cam what happened as he politely excused himself and left the house. a few seconds after cam left dylan heard her door being opened as steven peeped in.

he saw his sister sitting on her bed in tears as he rushed over and engulfed her in a hug. he brushed the hair out of her face as they were silent. he didn't need to ask her what happened because he knew silence was the best medicine at that moment.

but as dylan looked back on that night she wished it went differently. she wished she didn't yell. she wished she'd reached out to him after, swallow her pride and tell him she was sorry for that night. but most of all she wished she could go back to december.

back when they were fine. back when they were madly in love. back when there wasn't a doubt in the world that cam was hers and she was his. because she so badly kissed his tan skin, that sweet smile of his. but most of all the way he was so good to her.
