It was a rather peaceful afternoon. Usually, at this time of the day, I would have been training with Paul, and sometimes on my own when he had to work. However, today was different; he strangely left me free to do as I pleased. I wasn't sure why he made that decision, but I didn't dwell on it too much. I welcomed the opportunity to have some time to myself, away from the scorching sun outside.
With this newfound freedom, I dedicated most of my time studying alone, delving into the notes Roxy had prepared for me about the various prominent demon races in the Demon Continent. This wasn't entirely within the scope of her lessons, but it was a personal request of mine. I couldn't resist the chance to learn more about the Demon Continent, especially given that Roxy herself was a demon.
After she revealed her true identity, I couldn't help but think about how unusual it was to have a demon as our tutor. I couldn't shake the feeling that there might be deep-seated prejudices against demons in this world, especially given Paul and Zenith's initial reactions upon meeting Roxy. It stirred a sense of sympathy within me, thinking about the problems she might have faced throughout her life simply because of her race. Prejudices, as it seemed, were an issue in this world, much like in any other.
As I finished reading and studying the notes Roxy had provided me, I felt a growing curiosity and desired to learn more. I decided to pay a visit to her room to ask some additional questions.
I knocked on her door and waited for her response. "Come in," she said from the other side, prompting me to gently open the door.
I had visited Roxy's room countless times before. It resembled a typical room, not too different from Rudy's and mine. However, her room had a unique charm, a touch of... Magic. The walls were covered with various sheets of paper, adorned with unfamiliar notes and peculiar drawings. I struggled to understand those strange characters, realizing that that writing wasn't in the human language I was accustomed to.
It became a habit for me to look at these papers, occasionally checking if she swapped them out for new ones. Indeed, Roxy often did so, but still, the contents remained an enigma to me.
"Did you finish that?" Roxy greeted me from her seat at the desk, her finger indicating the book I held in my arms.
"Yeah!" I nodded, returning her notes. "Understanding the various demon races and other creatures inhabiting the Demon Continent was surprisingly straightforward. It was an enjoyable read."
"It's good to hear that. Kael, you're an excellent student, I must say," Roxy complimented me with a smile. "While Rudy's magical talent is impressive, your curiosity is such a valuable trait. I've rarely encountered someone as inquisitive as you."
Her compliments filled me with a warm sense of pride. Recognition for my curiosity felt like being acknowledged as someone special.
"So... Tell me," Roxy began, her tone suggesting she had something important to ask. Indeed, she did. "Do you have any other requests for things to learn? You're incredibly diligent and interested in various subjects, some of which may not fall within my expertise. But I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have."
I wasn't quite sure how to respond. While I had learned a lot in the past few months and knew there was still much more to explore, I was acutely aware of the limits of Roxy's knowledge. She was an expert in magic, not history, geography, or other fields of study. It always left me feeling a bit uneasy when she asked about my interests beyond magic, unsure if she would have any expertise in the topics I wanted to delve into. Still, I decided to give it a try, even though I suspected it might be a long shot.
"When you discussed the origin of magic, you mentioned that it's unrelated to practices that can be done with tools, correct?" I began with my question.
