Summary- While on a Muggle train, Hermione meets Y/N (I don't know what this is, I thought it would be cute *set in 1998*)
"I am going to miss this train if I don't hurry up" Was the words that were running through Y/N's mind as he made his way through the bustling train station on that cold December evening, his eyes on the beautiful locomotive that was set to take him to his destination. He was on route from Cambridge where he studied at it's prestigious university back home in London for the Christmas break. It had been a long term full of studying and boring lectures; he was just happy to be heading home.
Y/N checked the train lines when he notices that the train that he was supposed to get on was leaving so he made a dash, keeping the train in sight until he thankfully made it on in the nick of time, grabbing a seat near the back. His heart raced as he took a seat, checking that he had all of his things but one was missing- his rucksack that had all of his homework in.
"Looking for something?" He then heard a voice above him, he looked up and there was a girl standing there with the rucksack in question in her hand and her own rolling suitcase in the other. "You dropped it when you were making that brilliant dash to get onto the train so I picked it up for you."
He took the bag from her, he now could calm down fully. "Thank you, I really appreciate it."
"You don't mind if I sit with you, everywhere else seems to be full." She asks, peering around the room once more so Y/N doesn't hesitate to let her sit down as he stored his luggage in the overhead compartment. "I'm Hermione Granger, and you are?"
"Oh, I'm Y/N Y/L/N." He retook his seat and finally felt a real burst of fresh air in his lungs as the train began its ride to King's Cross Station.
"What are all of the bags for? Seems like a lot for just one person to be lugging around everywhere." Hermione quirked an eyebrow at him, as if trying to read his character one way or another. "Even I don't bring this much when I went to school where I did."
"Oh, sorry, I go to Cambridge University and I'm heading home for the holidays. All of this is just what I take with me every term after clearing out my dormitory."
"Cambridge University, that's impressive. I heard that place is quite amazing." She nodded at him as if to approve of his choices in life. "What are you studying there?"
"Law, it's a very confusing and hard course but I really enjoy learning about the world that we live in. I really enjoy the debates and the mooting competitions. I could do without some of the very lame seminars but what can you do? I'm trying to become a bloody lawyer here." The two of them shared a laugh together as the train tugged along the tracks. "What about you? Where did you go to school? If you don't mind me asking..."
There was a look of hesitation on her face before it hit Y/N for a second, she was Hermione Granger, that friend of Harry Potter that his brother would come home and natter all about during the summer and Christmas holidays. "It's Hogwarts, isn't it? Don't worry, I'm a Squib."
"Yeah, you got me, I'm a bloody witch. What gave it away?"
"Nothing like that, I just only now recognised you from the papers that seem to be screaming you and that Harry Potter's face all of the bloody time since that Battle of Hogwarts took place the year before." He looks around to see that everyone else seemed more interested in their own things to be listening to their conversation so Y/N pulled his copy of the Daily Prophet that he had been getting from a close friend who happened to be a wizard. He had kept it a secret from his muggle roommates, reading it in the middle of the night while they weren't there, just to keep up with what was going on in the world that he was born into but didn't really live in.
Hermione could see a little hint of sadness hit him when the Battle of Hogwarts was mentioned so she could help but wonder why, it was obvious that the battle was a hard subject for him but she just couldn't put her finger onto why. "Is there something about the Battle of Hogwarts that hit home hard? I can see the sadness in your eyes when that topic came up."
"I guess so." He took a deep breath in before continuing. "My father was a member of the Order of the Phoenix, lost his life during that battle and I can't help but miss him every waking day. It's been a year since and I still have nights where I'll just cry as I think about him."
"I'm sorry to hear about your father, we lost a lot of people that day and it's always heart-breaking to hear about people losing beloved family members no matter the circumstances. They might have done some awful things but they are still human." A glimmer of sympathy rolled through her eyes as she leaned over, placing a hand on his in support.
"So, back onto more happier topics, what were you doing in Cambridge then?" Y/N quickly changed the subject, wiping the remnants of tears out of his eyes but Hermione's hand didn't move one inch from his as they continued their conversation.
"My grandparents live up there, I've basically been living with them for the last couple of months to get over whatever this was and now, I'm heading back to my old house in Hampstead and try figure out what I want to do next." She sighed at the thought of the horrible memories coming back to her. "My parents are Muggles, they've been living in Australia for the last couple of months since the war. I've tried to convince them over the phone to come back to England but they seem quite content over there- almost as if restoring their memories didn't really work."
Y/N couldn't help but chuckle at that last bit as he leaned back in his seat when a thought came to him. "You wanna hang out with me at Christmas? My mum is on Ministry business over the holidays so I could use some company and my brother wants nothing to do with me. Obviously, you don't have to if you don't want to."
"You know what? That might be quite nice actually, neither of us really have family to spend with so we have to make do, huh?" So the two of them decide to spend their Christmas break at Y/N's house in London and they surprisingly have a good time together, telling stories about their childhoods and their hopes for the future.
They spent time whenever they could over the next couple months with their friendship slowly morphing into a romantic relationship, that eventually got more and more serious until Y/N proposed and they were wed. Babies came soon enough and they lived our the rest of their days by one another's side. Y/N graduated from university and went on to become a very successful lawyer in the Muggle world while Hermione started a job at the Ministry of Magic, eventually becoming Minister of Magic.
Who knew that Y/N would meet his soulmate on a train, one December evening in 1998?
