Perfectly ironed and crisp, I straighten out my church outfit for today on my bed. I'm wearing an African print dress, I saved this one for special events at church. Today, a new pastor and his family are joining our church to help expand the church. My dad has supposedly known this new pastor for years now but we have never met him or his family. Apparently he has kids my age so I'm even more excited to meet them and give them a warm welcome.I want to make a good first impression so today I'm experimenting with my makeup. Usually I just throw on mascara or fake lashes if i'm feeling it and concealer where I need it, all topped off with my chocolate coloured lip gloss. My go-to look, but today I feel like trying something new so I sit at my vanity looking into the drawers and trying to visualise what Im going for.
I instead roll across my room on my desk chair and reach for my phone, I immediately facetime Victoria in seek of her advice. That girl is like a beginner make-up mastermind.
"Kemiii-" Victoria begins but I cut her off mid squeal
"Vix!!! I need your help. I don't know what makeup look I should go for today"
"A simple 'hi Victoria, how are you doing' is too hard now?" She jokes
"Sorry. Hi Victoria how are you doing today" I say sarcastically
"Good thank you, now how are you on this fine blessed morning?"
"Bad. I wanna try something new with my makeup but I don't know where to start"
"Girl, this is what you're losing your mind for? Just do the usual lashes concealer and gloss" She says after sipping on something
Wow she really knows me
"Yeah but today is that welcoming of the new pastors family" I whine
"Oh yeah! I completely forgot" She replies before biting into something
"Vix, I'm in a crisis and your busy munching and crunching away" I continue whinging
"Hold on" she says with her mouth full " I'm adding Alexis so she can help us"
"Ok good, knowing that girl shes probably all done and church doesn't start for anther 3 hours" It's true though, Alexis is always dressed with her make-up hours before any event starts
"Hey girlies" Sqeals Alexis as she loads into the facetime, her raspy voice and her sophisticated british accent makes her even more pretty than she already is. Alex was born here in the uk but she's Nigerian too. Or t least we think she is, her dad is dark but her mum is light skinned so she looks mixed race
As you can see our little trio has an excited squealing thing going on
"I told you Vix, she already has her make-up done and her outfit on" I say crossing my arms
"I'm not fully done yet, not even halfway" laugh Alexis
Alexis joined our church when we were 12. It's been 5 whole years and she never fails to surprise us . She's half Nigerian and half something else. Vix and I think she might have a little white in there somewhere because her Mum is incredibly light skin and has 3c hair. We've never asked her Mum because one time when her family first joined the church we asked Alexis if she was part white, she got so offended and stopped talking to us for a whole 7 months, it was really petty but we were kids so its valid. Alexis has been through so much in her life, thats why she indulges herself in clothes and make-up. When she was 14 she suddenly got paralysed from the waist down for a year and two months. It was the scariest thing ever and I hate thinking about it. The parents never talk about it and we all just pretend it never happened. She was in and out of hospitals to get tests done but they never found out what paralysed her. She barely talked, barley ate and was super depressed. That's when she discovered God. God was the light in her life. He saved her healed her bones. Her relationship with God has been rocky lately but she's not giving up, she loves God with all her heart but the things of the world have got her in a trance.
"Lex, I need your help. Today is that introduction thing and we have to make a good impression but I don't know what look to go for.
"What about a natural cute makeup look" Suggests Victoria with a mouthful of food
"First of all Vix, swallow your food hon, second of all Kemi, I think you should go for full glam. Make their jaws drop to the ground. Who knows mabey theres a daughter our age who needs to know the kind of girls we are.
"Uh, what's that supposed to mean?" I ask her while I watch her put on bright purple eyeshadow.
"Like, she would need to know that you are 'That Girl' or theres a son our age who you need to impress"
"Babe, with all due respect, the goal is to welcome them to church not tho impress their son" Victoria says, putting her mug down and paying full attention to Alexis's eyeshadow.
"What? She has to look good" Alexis says in a defensive way causing Victoria to chuckle.
They have an interesting friendship. They're really good friends and they love each other very much but their like bickering sisters sometimes. Victoria thinks Alexis is immature and lexis thinks Victoria is passive aggressive. I guess I sort too the glue in this trio. It's wired but I love them so much.
"I like the sound of a natural make-up look" I say sounding positive
"Ok, whatever" Alexis laughs "Let me see what products you're using
I flip my camera over so she can see my make-up spilled out unto the table.
"Ok, good selection but take out that foundation" She says pointing to my favorite MAC foundation. "It's too heavy and you're gong for natural remember?"
"Hm, make-up artist" jokes Victoria "What about me sha, I think I might do a little natural moment aswell"
"Ok babes, I have to to go but I'll text you when I'm on my way to church" chirps Alexis as she hangs up the call
"Ok Kems, it's just me and you"
"What are you going to wear?" I ask Victoria
"Girl, I do not know" she says, breaking out her fake African American accent which makes me chuckle "What about you?"
"I'm doing african wear today and I have the perfect dress" I say excitedly
"Ouuuu I cant wait to see it, I think I might wear a top with some flare pants or something. My parents are back from Ghana so my Mum is back to being super strict about church outfits.
"Vix that sound amazing, and you just got your hair braided so it's really gonna tie everything together"
"Thanks Kemi, I gotta go finish getting ready but I'll see you at church. Oh and wear that matching purse you and I have." Says Victoria in an optimistic tone
"Ok and bye. Love you" I answer before hanging up the phone
Author Note
Hey guys, thank you so much for reading and I apologise for the one month wait. I got some messages asking when I'm going to post next and I seriously had no idea people were enjoying my book this much. To compensate for the long wait and the short chapter, I'll release chapter 06 in a couple of days instead of the usual 1 or 2 week wait. I love you all and God bless you all ❤️
