Chapter One

I woke up to my alarm going off meaning it was time for me to wake up and get Synthia up and ready for school, I stretched out my body and let out a deep yawn before forcing myself out of bed and finding my work outfit. I quickly changed into my uniform, walked over to my mirror and brushed my hair out and put my hair up in a messy bun before doing a light makeup which consisted of mascara and highlight. I then slid my keys and phone and wallet into my backpack and walked out to the kitchen/dining area and set it on the couch before walking into Synthia's room, I knocked before entering to see her still asleep so I walked over to the side of her bed and lightly shook her arm. "Synthia, it's time to get ready for school.. I'm gonna get your cereal ready so you can just come out and eat then go brush your teeth okay?" I said. She groaned at first but eventually opened her eyes and stretched out to wake up before saying "fine". I smiled at her sheepishly and walked out closing her door behind me. I walked over to the fridge and grabbed the krave cereal from about the fridge and grabbed the milk before pouring her a book of cereal. "I have to go grocery shopping today" I sighed to myself knowing I only had enough to pay off our bills for our awful apartment. It's literally in one of the sketchiest neighborhoods here in New York. I'm originally from Manzanillo Mexico but my mom moved our family here until my dad got a job offer back in Mexico and divorced my mom and left all of us behind because my mom really enjoyed the life we had begun here in America, after my father left, my mom really didn't handle it well and she lost her job and became heavily addicted to drugs and alcohol which eventually led to her demise when I was twenty two. Which led me to getting legal guardianship of my sister so she wasn't placed into the foster care system. Unfortunately I had watched my mom struggle and was old enough to realize and understand what she was doing wasn't right but I had no one to speak to about it except for my childhood best friend who I also happen to work with, her name is Hailee. I hadn't realized I had zoned out until Synthia walked out and said "Thank you" before sitting down and beginning to eat her food. "Of course" I smiled. "Sense it's Friday could I stay the night at Chloes house tonight?" Synthia asked. "Did her mom or dad say it was okay?" I asked her. "Uh, I think so?" She said confused. "I'll message Carlos and see if it's okay with him" I chuckled. "Okay thank you sissy!" She smiled excitedly at me. "Of course!" I said finishing up my cereal and cleaning the dishes. "So what do you have planned tonight?" Synthia asked. "Uh, I'm not sure I'm gonna have to wait tell I see Hailee tonight but you know how she is on the weekends" I chuckled. "Yeah I do, it's a shame our bills are so expensive so you could have some extra money on enjoying yourself as much as she does" hearing synthia say that broke my heart, I did and still do everything I can to hide the pain and darkness from the real world from her without completley keeping her from love and socializing all together so her noticing that we're struggling as well really pains me. I shook away the sadness I felt in that moment and sighed, "it's okay thought hailee always offers to pay for me and sometimes men offer to buy us drinks as well." I said trying to laugh it off like it didn't affect me. "Well that's good! Let the men come to you" she laughed before sliding her cereal bowl toward me on the table and skipping off to go finish getting ready for school. I chuckled but then sighed and grabbed her bowl and cleaned it before making sure I had everything I needed one last time before heading out. "You ready Syn?" I called out. "Yeah I packed a bag full of clothes and put that in my backpack in case I can stay the night". "Okay good, Carlos hasn't responded yet but hopefully he will before I pick you up after school and I'll let you know then okay?" I smiled. "Sounds good to me, now let's goo" she laughed running out the door and down the hall to the stairs. "You're going to be the death of me child" I laughed locking our apartment door and following after her. From our apartment to the school was about a ten minute drive and the entire time Syn and I jammed out to music to put us in a "hype mood" before our long day as Syn & Hailee call it. "I'll be here to get you at 3:30 okay?" I said as we pulled up and she was getting out. "Okay, I love you! Have a good day" she smiled and ran into school. I turned the music up a bit louder and then started my fifteen minutes drive now to work. I walked into work, clocked in and instantly found Hailee standing at the check in desk with a few of our other employees, Mark, Alex, and Hannah. "Goodmorning my saving grace" Hailee laughed pushing through them to hug me once she saw me walking up. "I don't even wanna know, I'm just mentally exhausted right now" I sighed as I hugged her back. "We'll talk when we're alone" she whispered in my ear before pulling away. I just nodded in response. "Are we busy today?" I groaned. "Man you really aren't feeling good today are you?" Said Mark. "Nah man, my sisters noticing how bad I'm struggling with our bills right now and I just can't keep pretending everything is okay" I groaned. "Hunny, we're friends fir a reason.. if you ever need help don't be afraid to ask one of us" Hannah said. "I really appreciate that from you guys but I really can't ask that of you, I absolutley hate asking for help.." I sighed. "It's fine I'll figure it out, I always do.." I sighed before walking off without another word. As I was walking to the lunch area to get a granola bar I got a call from Carlos.

*phone call*
(C: Carlos M:Me)

C: Hey sorry to bother you. Are you at work by chance and are there any free nurses currently? Also yes Synthia is more then welcome to stay the night at the house this weekend, I'm busy with work so my wife Sandra will have them!

M: uh, odd question haha but yeah there's a couple of us free right now if needed. And okay thank you! I'll pick the girls up after school and drive them over to your place!

C: okay that sounds great, thank you! I'll let Sandra know right away but uh.. anyone there good at removing bullets from arms? *nervous chuckle*

M: I'm not going to ask, we are in New York for God sakes but yeah I'll be at the check in desk waiting for you.. I hope your okay though!

C: Oh no it's not me, it's my boss. Something came up and He-

M: you good?

C: yeah sorry boss is yelling at me to step on the gas, I'll be there in 5 minutes, 4 minutes.. any second thank you!

M: uh- okay...
*End Call*
