"Father, I propose that we deploy our troupes and attack the dragon," said the second prince of the Reign kingdom, Edward Soloria. He had the ideal appearance of a prince in a fantasy novel. Blonde hair and blue eyes.
No way in hell was Ivan going to allow this. This was tantamount to asking for death. How was he supposed to have a peaceful life if he died? This prince needs to stop spouting nonsense.
Stepping forward from where he was standing behind the golden chair his father was seated in he bowed his head to the King and spoke, "Your majesty, this servant implores that you decline this proposal."
He felt the gazes of multiple nobles on him as he said so. They were probably curious what the scheming, useless son of the duke was thinking. Ivan did not care at all, his objective was to convince the King and everybody else present that the prince's suggestion was ridiculous and should not be implemented.
"Why do you say that Ivan Selenium?" A friend of Edward, the redhead Robert Nyles asked. Scratch that thought, maybe not everybody should be convinced, and the stupid ones should be forgotten.
Raising his head, he faced the King, "Your majesty, that dragon is anything but a threat to the people," he turned to face Robert, "Now tell me, when in the history of this kingdom has that dragon ever attacked, eaten, or abducted anyone."
"It did. Just a few days ago my friends and I went into its cave. We were attacked, which resulted in Lars being bedridden and the rest of us badly wounded. I hope that Father forgives me for not mentioning it, I didn't want anyone worried," said Edward.
Sighing, Ivan replied to him, "Your Highness, you and your group of friends were intruders in the dragon's home. Did you expect it not to attack? Furthermore, the children and elderly of the dukedom play and stroll very close to the entrance of that cave, why have they remained unscathed?"
Edward was about to reply but was halted by his friend, Nicholas Valence. Nicholas adjusted his glasses and spoke, "We believe that the dragon has stolen treasure."
Ivan rolled his eyes. This brat was smart, he made a statement that would easily get the attention of the greedy nobles sitting around the meeting table. It is sad that despite this, he is no match for Ivan.
"Does the Holy Maiden want an item that you think is in the dragon's possession? Is that why you're so pressed on this? Is the item that she wants perhaps the Clear Jade Pendant?"
Ivan watched as Nicholas's eyes widened. Ivan never understood why these men wanted to wage war so badly against the dragon when he read the book. The book never mentioned the reason, however, it did mention that the heroine, Lucy Peagen, fell in love with that pendant when she saw a drawing of it as well as a description of it in an old book in her home.
Chatter ensued in the room. He was certain that everyone saw the reaction of the prince and his friends. It was well known that they doted on the Holy Maiden despite knowing her for a short time.
Raising a single finger Ivan said, "First, Mr. Valence has not provided any proof of the dragon's alleged theft," he raised a second finger, "Second, without any proof whatsoever you trespassed unto its property, its home," adding a third finger, "then it defends itself. Justly so, and you come back claiming that the entire nation must aid you in this one-sided fight that you've brought upon yourself. Why? Because you want to impress a woman?"
"Father! We saw the Ruby Crown in the dragon's cave!" the prince said. To Ivan, this was a last-ditch effort. He heard gasps in the room.
Annoyed at how long this dragged on he spoke, "And?"
"It was stolen! That crown originates from our kingdom!"
"So what if it originates from our kingdom? Does that mean it's stolen? Of all the plausible explanations in the world why theft?"
