Later that day...
*Knock, knock, knock.*
"Come in," a voice called from behind the door.
Elena and Marcus entered the chief of police's office. Chief Lawrence looked up from his paperwork, his glasses perched on his nose.
"Hayes, Novak, what are you doing here?" he asked, his gaze returning to his paperwork.
Elena and Marcus exchanged a quick glance before Elena spoke. "To give a report, sir."
The chief's attention was piqued. He set down his fountain pen and straightened up in his seat. "Very well, brief me."
"Sir, we've made progress with our number one suspect, Pablo Escobar," Elena began, handing over a file.
The chief accepted the file, flipping through its contents. "Explain."
"We found files containing a contract agreement between the auction hosts and Pablo," she explained.
The chief looked up from the file, nodding in acknowledgment. "How did you obtain these?"
"He invited me over, sir," Elena replied.
The chief chuckled. "You certainly know how to exploit a man's weakness."
"Well, in the contract, we found another signature beside Pablo's, reading 'Salvatore'," Marcus interjected.
"Do you know who they are?" the chief inquired.
"Unfortunately, no, sir," Marcus answered.
"I cross-referenced databases in New York, but it was only when I checked an Italian database that I stumbled upon a small family named Salvatore. They resided in a remote village on the outskirts of Sant'Angelo Mare. They tragically died in a terrorist attack, a fire to be exact," Marcus explained.
The chief's attention turned to Marcus. "And how did you come across this information, Hayes?"
Marcus hesitated before admitting, "I might have hacked into the hospital's database."
Elena shot Marcus a reproachful look. "Marcus, why didn't you tell me?"
"I-I thought it could help," Marcus stuttered.
The chief's stern gaze softened. "Words, Hayes."
"I'm really sorry, Chief," Marcus apologized, his gaze downcast.
"It's alright," the chief conceded.
"Now, how do you plan to proceed with this secret Salvatore family?"
"Well, Pablo Escobar invited me on a lunch date tomorrow, and I was planning to ask him if he could take me to the auction. I hope to find some clues," Elena explained.
The chief nodded approvingly. "Very well, carry on. But, Marcus, remember we need proper authorization for accessing sensitive information."
"Now get out," the chief concluded, dismissing them.
