the loud sound of the alarm blasted in noel's ear. he woke up with a sigh, slowly stretching his arms and standing up.
"ugh.." he swallows down a large gulp of water and changes into his uniform. as he steps down the stares of his home, he notices his mother asleep on the couch.
she must have worked overtime again... noel thought. his mother was always working overtime, even if it exhausted her. she was a good mother, no doubt about it, but she was struggling. noel was struggling. money was tight.
noel just let out another sigh and quietly made himself some toast. he munched on this toast for a few minutes, and washed his plate. noel finished up getting ready for the day before grabbing his bag and walking to the corner of his street, where the school bus always stopped.
he waited for about ten minutes before the bus finally pulled up, the doors swinging open, the exhaust filling the already grey sky. the cold of the winter nipped at noel's nose before he stepped onto the bus, and sitting in the only empty seat, shoving his earbuds into his ears before blaring his music to drown out the annoying sound of high schoolers. god he hated school. thank the lord it was his senior year.
after about ten minutes of this bus ride, the doors swung open to pick up one last kid. this kid was tall..but noel could hear him walking over his music. he turned over to see a boy with crutches tucked under his arms, a warm smile pasted on his face. it was ricky potts. ricky smiled at noel. they were in choir together, but, ricky couldn't speak or sing, due to his disability. noel was always respectful of this, so he moved over to make room for ricky and his crutches. he actually stood up to help the poor boy, holding the crutches while he slowly sat himself. noel sat down again, and the bus moves along.
ricky spent his time on the bus drawing cats and stars on a notebook he kept in his bag. ricky loved cats, one of the billion reasons that made him unique. when you live in a small town, even liking cats is unique. everything made you unique. that's why noel had such a hard time. he was the only gay man in uranium, which meant he'd probably never find a boyfriend until he moved.
the bus came to a halt as noel stepped out after ricky. he put his earbuds back in and walked to his first class of the day:choir.
as noel stepped into choir, he bumped into someone, falling on the ground and dropping his belongings. noel looked up at this person, only seeing a silhouette. this person was standing right under one of the ceiling lights. all noel could hear was a scoff, and this tall figure walked away. noel stood himself up, now making an attempt to see the face of this mysterious asshole, who bumped into people and just walks away.
