Microsoft's .NET Framework is a proprietary software framework intended to be used by most new applications created for the Windows platform. It was developed in the late 1990s as part of the .NET strategy under the name of Next Generation Windows Services (NGWS). The first beta versions of .NET 1.0 were released in early 2000, with the final version of .NET 1.0 released in February 2002.

The .NET Framework is a software environment that includes a Framework Class Library (FCL) and allows interoperability between programming languages. It runs programs in the Common Language Runtime (CLR) virtual machine, which provides services such as memory management and security. The framework is designed for use in Windows applications and provides a range of services such as web application development, user interface design, and network communications.

Microsoft also produces an integrated development environment (IDE) called Visual Studio for .NET software. The .NET Framework is a proprietary software framework, although the firm worked to standardize the software stack almost immediately, and in 2001, both Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) and C# were ratified as ECMA International (ECMA) standards.

In April 2019, Microsoft released the last version of the framework as a proprietary offering - .NET Framework 4.8. Only monthly security and reliability bug fixes to that version have been released since then and no further changes to that version are planned.

Microsoft has also since then, created a free, open-source, cross-platform framework called .NET which is intended to be the successor to .NET Framework.
