I stepped out of the house, keys in hand and feeling a lot better since I talked to Shawn.
I heard the door to the house slam shut behind me and I turned as a familiar face stepped in front of me.
"Hey." The guy said, smiling softly. "Zoe, right?"
"Yeah." I stated cautiously. "Do I know you?"
"Yeah. We went to elementary and middle school together." He nodded. "I'm Chris."
"Oh." I nodded in realization. "I remember you. You were the kid with the glasses and the huge Afro."
"Yeah." He smiled, a row of white teeth, contrary to his dark skin. "Not many people remember that."
"Don't worry." I smiled. "I'll keep your secret."
I turned away from him, ready to cross the small road and get into the car, pick up dinner and go back to the hotel to get some much needed rest.
"How long are you in town?" He asked, causing me to look back at him.
"Two weeks." I crossed my arms over my chest. "Maybe less, possibly more. I don't know. Why?"
"I was hoping you'd let me take you out." He shrugged.
"I don't know." I bit my lip. "I had a weakness for Afros. Now, you don't seem as appealing as you were then to me."
"I still wear glasses." He smiled. "If that makes a difference."
I smiled. "I don't know. I'll have to think about that one. It's a tempting offer but I can't agree to something I'm not sure about."
"I understand." He nodded. "How will I get ahold of you to ask you out again tomorrow?"
I pondered over my options. Give my childhood crush my phone number or completely avoid the subject of giving it to him until I can sneak away.
I went with option one.
I dug in my bag, pulling out my phone. "Put your number in and I'll give you mine." I said as we traded phones.
"Okay." He said after a few seconds. "I'll call you tomorrow morning and see if you'd changed your mind."
"You're not one of those guys who will keep calling even if I ignore you, are you?"
"Fortunately, I'm not. Unfortunately, I am in this case." He smiled. "It was nice seeing you again."
"You too." I nodded.
I had no idea what I'd gotten myself into.
