Thinking quickly I skittered out of the garage and I plunged myself into the outside light, of which I hadn’t seen in a few days. As I stumbled out into the early daylight I heard Shannon and Chet walking Darren into the car. I counted my lucky stars that I had gotten out of there when I did.

I rushed over to the entrance of the house and snuck through the front door just as Shannon and Chet closed the garage door. I breathed a heavy sigh of relief as I tip-toed over to my room. As I passed the kitchen I heard Darren squeal with delight as Chet strapped him into his car seat. I flopped down on my bed and listened to my heart rate go back to normal when I realized something.

I still had the keys.

I stood up in a panic and threw myself out of my room making another silent prayer. I flung the car keys on the kitchen counter and took a mad dash for my room. The garage door burst open and Chet came barreling towards me at what seemed like a hundred miles per hour. I tried to out run him.

But it was already too late.

Chet had his hands around my throat

Chet wrapped his beefy, strong, fat fingers around my neck and began to squeeze the remaining air I had in my lungs. He held me up by my neck and began to drag me to the garage. Shannon opened the door for him so he wouldn’t have to let go of me. What a nice little mistress she was. Following orders like my mom used to. But she had a heart and one day during my beatings she intervened.

She tried to help me.

She tried to call 911.

She tried.

And failed.

And she was gone.

Left for dead on the side of a road.

By this time in my thoughts I was turning purple. Chet through me in the back of the jeep next to Darren and he smiled at me and my red and purple face.

Daddy’s boy.

Chet didn’t even bother trying to put my whole body into the car, just my torso made it in before he slammed the door against my back, knocking the air I had just sucked in from his last escapade.

Whimpering, I threw myself into the back of the jeep and closed the door completely. By this time Shannon had found the car keys and was now sitting in the passenger seat of the car. She gently placed the keys in the ignition and waited for Chet to sit in the driver’s side.

Good little mistress.

Chet started the car and pressed the button to open the garage door and pulled out of his mansion of a house. As the trees and other houses flew by I wondered if I could really pull this off.

It only took me a split second to realize I could.

Because I had to.
