CHAPTER FIVE: PARTY

THERE WAS A CERTAIN level of uneasiness in Mia's stagnant form as she waited by the old pine door of her best friend's log house. Unlike Hattie and Kayla Jo who lived in small suburbs near the center of town, the Weber home was closer towards the outskirts. It was south of Forks, closer to La Push Beach.

Most of the girl's anxiety stemmed from the turmoil at home. Everyone seemed to be blaming Edward for his slip up regarding Bella and mulling over with anger about it. It was easier for Mia to forgive him though since she understood what it was like for the human girl to hold such a powerful secret.

In some strange way, Mia wanted to connect more with the unusual teenage girl from Phoenix Arizona. There was a level of comradery to be had given their connection to the Cullens and ever changing mortal state of existence. Ever since she was eleven, when her family broke the truth to her (Mia had known on some level for years but didn't want to believe it), the girl had wanted to share the knowledge with someone else.

She never did – of course – because Mia didn't want to harm her family, but the desire remained the same. Bella provided a viable outlet for her to vent unrestrained about the reality of her life as the youngest daughter and little sister of vampire parents and siblings.

And sure, there was something to fear regarding Bella's knowledge. The more people who know the truth about the Cullens' existence and Mia's place in the family, the higher the chance that they could be called out for it. None of them believe that the Volturi would take kindly for the fact that she remained unturned and still aware of the truth.

However, Mia could find herself growing distracted as her hand hovered above the door. A short shout a few yards away from Emmett pulled the girl out of her resolve. He could sense Mia's hesitance to leave him and the violent pounding of her heart rate as the thoughts simmered. How strange it was that the brunette desired independence but at the same time she had real separation anxiety around leaving her protective loved ones.

"Hey!" The twenty-year-old called from his open Jeep. Mia stilled before whipping her head around. "Are you okay?" There was real concern interwoven within the carefree nature of Emmett's words. Of all her brothers, he tended to be the more goofball one of the trio but it didn't mean that he was any less protective of his little sister.

"Yeah." She breathed. "I'll be fine. Just have a lot on my mind."

"Well, can you have 'a lot on your mind' inside of the house?"  Emmett mimicked, his voice was tense with urgency. "I have places to be."

He was standing now in the driver's seat with his large arms wrapped around the frame of the vehicle. Mia could start to see a faint glimmer on his uncovered hands through the cloudbreak and her mouth dropped reflexively. Oh. Now, his abnormal behavior was starting to make sense. He didn't want to become exposed before the sunlight broke completely through the clouds and lit him up like a human-sized disco-ball.
