2024, Rio
The wind that night was blowing at 80 km/h, but the confused, desperate, and scared crowd at the airport didn't know anything about that. The vulnerable people willing to leave Rio that day could barely pay attention to nature; they just saw the black foam covering everything, from the windows to the doors, cars, and trees falling in the distance, and now an airplane falling from the sky. The only thing they could do was the human thing to do: jump to conclusions, cry, call family members, and "Karen up" their way to an answer.
In the huge parking lot, there were people running away, some running to the departure area, others to their cars. Kids were crying, and Mr. Johnson started the car they would use to escape from that mess. Jonathan couldn't afford the luxury of thinking for one more second. He got into the minibus as everyone witnessed the disastrous situation in silence.
The kid that was already seatbelted in his position between Amany and Júlia and too stunned to react. Júlia held his hand and he just looked at her as he was in a shaken state of mind.
-We need to leave, Amany said.
- You're such a genius, Mr. Johnson replied as he tried to figure out how to leave the place when many more people were trying to do the same.
Nobody laughed at his little joke. Jacob sitting by his side just looked at him like he was begging for him to take them out of that place as soon as he could.
- I need everyone to stay calm.
- Everyone is dead silent, Mr. Johnson, Jacob said.
- Keep it that way, Johnson said while maneuvering the car.
That moment they left with their instincts guiding them through the chaos. With a mixture of fear and urgency created by the deafening roar of sirens, the shouts of security personnel, and the billowing smoke intensified the sense of impending danger. Their hearts were pounding as Mr. Johnson found their way out passing by desperate pedestrians and drivers.
Hours Later...
In the dimly lit, eerie confines of a colonial house in Petropolis, Johnson's sinister intentions were already chillingly apparent to Amany and Júlia, who were now separated from the sleeping Jacob and Jonathan. As the two girls sat handcuffed in the makeshift cell, they couldn't even imagine the facade of the house—an exquisite example of colonial architecture, with its solid stone walls and glassed wooden windows adorned with centuries-old artistic details.
A long covered porch with terracotta tiles extends along the front facade, providing shade and a pleasant spot to enjoy the view of the lush garden.their apprehension grew with every passing moment. Inside the underground room they found themselves in, the stone walls, moistened by the high humidity, lent an intimidating atmosphere to the space. The bed where the two women sat, frightened, didn't seem to belong to the setting; it was comfortable and modern.
