CHAPTER 4
Surprisingly, Jasper was a lot easier to work with today. I don't know what happened. One day he goes from being crazy and hyper to easy to work with and kind of sweet. He even licked me! Sure it sounds disgusting, but I'll admit, it was sweet. I feel so loved now.
I'm eating my usual lunch right now. A peanut butter and banana sandwich with a glass of nice cold milk. Sometimes I feel like a preschooler, but hey? It's good.
"Chase is gonna be here soon so I need the kitchen to be cleaned up," Grandpa says as he walks passed the kitchen.
"Wait, who's Chase?" I ask, sounding interested.
"I never told you about him? He comes here every once in a while to help with the barn grounds. I give him a little money in return. I guess you could say it's his summer job." Grandpa pauses for a moment. "He's actually about your age."
What? How could you not tell me this? What if he's cute? Will he like me? How do I look? I got to get ready!
"What time is he gonna be here?' I ask, sounding stressed out I'm sure.
"About one o'clock."
I dash upstairs. How could he tell me a boy my age is coming only 25 minutes before hand? That isn't near enough time I need to make myself look good.
I look through the drawers of clothes I unpacked. I didn't pack for meeting a cute boy. I packed for riding horses in the fields. I guess I'll just have to deal with what I have.
I slip on my cutest pair of skinny jeans, my pink and white plaid shirt and tuck it in. I then slip my brown studded belt through my jeans and slip on my cowgirl boots. I braid my my hair while leaving a little bit of strands out to make it look messy in a cute way.
"Ah, Chase, good to see you," I hear my Grandpa say through the bedroom door.
"You too." This voice is new. Obviously it belongs to Chase. I take a quick look at myself in the mirror. I don't look incredible, but it will have to work. I open the door and the voices grow louder.
"I don't believe you've meet my family," Grandpa says in a weird tone that I've never heard him speak in before. Why is he acting so polite? I mean, it's not like Chase cares. Well, I don't anyway.
"This is my daughter, Kelly, and my step son, Sean." I've never heard my parents' names been used in such a sentence. Grandpa must really like having Chase as a worker.
I decide to head down stairs before Grandpa has" the chance to tell Chase that I'm upstairs getting ready. It would make me sound like I was getting ready just for his arrival. Okay, that was exactly what I was doing, but I don't what Chase to know that!
I go by the front door and stand next to my mom and act like I was here the whole time.
"And this is my Granddaughter, Carter," Grandpa says. Chase turns his head and looks at me. I just hope my face doesn't turn red. I can feel myself starting to blush.
We make eye contact immediately. That's when I notice his beautiful blue eyes. They glisten in the light from the open windows. So does his lush dark brown hair. For a moment, I think of myself. He has a lot of my characteristics. No wonder he looks so cute.
"Hey, " Chase casually says.
I reply back with a simple, "Hey." That's all can come up with right now. Give me some slack! I'm standing right in front of probably the cutest boy I've ever seen!
"Well, I'll take you out to the stables and...actually, Carter can show you around," Grandpa decides. He knows exactly how to make things awkward doesn't he?
He turns to me with that look on his face saying,"Go show him around."
"Okay." I try to act like I'd enjoy showing him around, but I don't think I'm doing a good job.
We walk out the door and head for the stables when Chase starts a conversation.
"Do you live around here?" he asks.
"No. I come here for two weeks every summer."
"Oh." He sounds disappointed, which makes me smile a bit.
We don't talk for while until we reach the stables.
"Well, here it is," I say. I hope I sound interested in what I'm doing. I don't want him to come across me as boring.
"Cool. This is a nice stable," there's a pause as he walks in. "Work will be easy this summer."
"You only work during the summer?"
"No. I try to work when ever I can to earn a little extra money." There's another long pause. "So, you ride horses?"
"Not competitively, but yes, I do ride horses."
"You probably didn't think this, but I ride, too."
Really? I didn't know that super cute small town guys rode horses? Works for me. He's the total package!
He speaks up again. "Maybe we could ride sometime?"
I immediately knew the answer to his question. "Yeah. That'd be great."
Yes! I'm finally able do to something with a guy that isn't in my family, is super cute, and has the same interest as me. Things couldn't have gone any better, today.
I thought wrong, again.
