A strong smell of metal hung in the air, and it came directly from the bloody corpses lying across the bed, painting the pearl-white sheets a crimson red. The tension in the air made it even worse. It was making it hard to breathe–words being held back in fear of what that woman had to say.
What Prosper's mom had to say.
The rotting bodies stood still even when another zombie-like corpse was thrown on top of it carelessly, smearing the whole bed with red. In the corner of his eye, Prosper could see his mother grasping tightly on the corpse's hair. He knew that one day he would be one of the bodies that she'd had to grip so intensely onto.
Before he knew it, she was already making her way to him with an angered glare. Even in the dark-dimmed room, he could still see the disappointment and rage wiped all over her face. It was a face he'd always seen, the regular glare that she always wore around him. And yet, it still made his heart nearly burst out of his chest.
He stood beside the bloody bed, the strong smell of blood polluting his lungs. It smelt awful and horrendous, and it only got stronger as his mother gripped his hair. The same treatment she had with the corpses.
"You're the perfect person for this game, do you understand?!" A threatening tone was laced with her words as she spat at him.
All Prosper could do was avoid eye contact and shake his head no. He didn't want to go through this–he didn't want to put everyone in danger.
"Prosper, look at me," she commanded, grasping his face to look straight at her. "You are the most innocent one here. Over the past games, you've always stayed out of the spotlight."
"Mom–"
"Silence."
And just like that, Prosper was completely silent. Those words alone zipped his mouth shut, stealing anything he wanted to say out of his throat. They always have. He could feel his hands tremble slightly in fear.
His mother's glare kept him on hold. Then, after a small silence, she spoke with a softer, threatening voice. "I'm going to be killing off useless people, so don't be too surprised if there is a sudden suicide."
"..."
"Don't worry, no one is going to suspect you, my beautiful daughter."
