The Mobster's Temptation

Prologue

Nurse Liezel Rodriguez

"Can I have some toothpaste?" I was peacefully brushing my teeth in front of the mirror, when Guada poked her head in my bathroom.

I handed her the whole thing while my toothbrush was in my mouth.

"Me too!" I heard Ericka behind her.

"Take everything." I said through the bubbles in my mouth.

"Thanks!" Guada beamed before she left me alone. Perks of living with two broke resident doctors is that I always run out of toothpaste, because my toothpaste becomes our toothpaste.

Nang matapos akong gumayak sa banyo ay mabilis akong bumaba bitbit ang backpack ko na may mga kagamitan ko para sa twelve-hour shift ko sa ospital. When I got to our open kitchen, I started to fill up my hydroflask with water. Meanwhile, Ericka, a blonde and twenty-six year old, intern doctor who has an appetite of a five-year old is already rummaging through our  food pantry, hoping that she would find some M and M's she could take to the hospital.

I met her on Facebook when I was hunting for an apartment, two months after I passed the board. I messaged her and all she told me is that she's looking for a roommate who's not gonna kill her.

I already knew from that moment that I would be good friends with her. Meanwhile Guada is her classmate from med school, which is why they were already roommates. They posted that they only needed one more, since this was a three bedroom apartment and the rent was no joke.

"I don't know whose scrubs is this but it's mine now–" Sabi ni Guada na ngayon ay ngingi-ngising lumabas mula sa laundry room suot ang scrub top ko.

"That is mine! There is literally 'Lieze Rodriguez, BSN, RN' etched on it." I poked the breast pocket side of the scrubs where it says my name and degree on it, as we both stand here in front of the island counter, in the middle of the kitchen.

"Oh," she looked down for a moment, and grinned before she grabbed her hospital badge from the table.

"Well, in that case, bam—problem solved!" She clipped her badge that has a DOCTOR on it, so now it's covering my name.

"Guada!"

"Te amo, mamacita!" She grinned and started to snatch her things from the table. Ngingisi-ngisi lamang si Ericka na pinapanood kami habang kinakain niya ang M and M's na nahanap niya sa pantry. She's now all ready with her scrubs and whitecoat, nakasuot na rin ang backpack niya sa kanyang likuran.

I rolled my eyes and started walking with her. Ericka followed us and locked the front door. Sabay-sabay kaming papasok dahil walking distance lamang ang ospital mula sa apartment

"I will treat you to a vacation in Cancun when I become an attending. You will be my sugar beybeh!"

"What, like in ten years?" I snorted as we walked on the pavement. The sound of the cars' engine and horns filled my ears.

"Yes. Think of me as an investment, baby girl."

I chuckled and jokingly hit her arm. We reached the hospital's automatic double doors, and it was time for us to separate ways.

"Let's save lives, girls." We made a toast using our hydroflasks.

"Hey, don't fúck up the med order!" I said to Ericka—-or Dr. Eckroth in here.

"Yes, Nurse Liez!" She winked at me.

I shook my head before I headed to the nurses' locker room.

I am a nurse in residency, which means there will be a senior nurse following me around for six to twelve months. It could be longer or shorter, depending on how my perceptor will evaluate my competency, and decide to let me on my own. So far, this is my third month.
