Elijah was in Esther's room, he picked up the sage stick, knowing that it was used for privacy by witches and that made him suspicious.

Kara was sitting in an armchair, reading a magazine with her feet propped up on the coffee table.
Klaus was sitting on the sofa, sketching.
Rebekah walked in after hooking up with Damon.
"Well, well, well, there's our girl," Kol said, blocking her path.
Rebekah tried to walk past him, but Kol blocked her path again.
"Get out of my way, Kol," Rebekah told him.
"Out all night, what a scandal," Kol stated. "I trust you did better than that commoner, Matt, was it?"
"If you don't shut your mouth, the next thing to come out of it will be your teeth," Rebekah replied. Kara smiled. "Don't start, Kara."
"I didn't say anything," Kara said.
"I'm bored," Kol said, sighing as he fell into the armchair next to Kara. "Our sister is a strumpet."
"But at least she's having fun," Kara told him, smiling.
"I need entertainment," Kol added.
Klaus looked at him. "What are you waiting for? Go on, have at it."
"It's no fun to go alone," Kol told him. "Join me, Nik. It's the least you could do after sticking a dagger in my heart."
Klaus gave in. "Okay. Why not?" Kol smiled, satisfied. "I didn't have nearly enough to drink last night, what with you and Kara trying to murder Rebekah's date."
Kara closed the magazine she was reading. "I never laid a finger on him."
"No, you just sicced Kol on him, like a mad dog," Klaus said, standing and walking away.
Kara smiled, proudly.
Kol stood, following Klaus.
"Yes, please go," Rebekah told them. "This house has enough men rolling around in it."
Kol turned to point at her. "Just like you, Bekah."
Rebekah threw one of her high heels at him. "Good riddance, both of you."
Elijah walked in. holding the sage stick. "Rebekah. Kara."
Rebekah sighed. "Not you too, Elijah."
"I'm worried about Mother," Elijah told them. "Have you not noticed her strange behavior?"
"She's been dead for a thousand years," Kara replied. "What's strange for her?"
"Burned sage," Elijah said, handing the sage stick to Rebekah. Kara stood, walking closer. "She was doing a privacy spell."
Rebekah passed the sage stick to Kara.
"You know she fancies such things," Kara said. "Why don't you ask Finn? He's been doting on her."
"I don't trust Finn," Elijah expressed. "He hates what we are. He always has."
"That's not true," Rebekah said. "And as for Mother, she returned for one reason. To make her family whole. She loves us. What trouble are you looking to find?"
Kara looked at Elijah, starting to wonder if he was right to be suspicious of Esther.
