I awoke with a start, jolted from a restless sleep by a voice piercing through the tranquillity of my dreams. My mother’s voice echoed up the stairs, filled with urgency and frustration. "Heracles Alcor Black, get down here now!"
I glanced at the clock on my bedside table, its hands blaring that I had overslept. Panic surged through me. "What—oh, shit!" I exclaimed, propelling myself out of bed in a flurry of limbs. I yanked a t-shirt over my head and hastily pulled on my jeans, barely catching a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror as I tore through my room. The aroma of breakfast wafted through the house, mingling with the weight of my impending doom.
I raced down the stairs, my heart pounding. Just as I reached the front door, a wave of realization hit me—my wand! I sprinted back upstairs, snatching it from my desk where it rested beside a clutter of books and parchment. As I slipped it into the pocket of my worn jeans, I caught sight of my fluffy white cat, Icicle. Her big blue eyes blinked languidly at me, as though she understood the chaos of my morning.
“Come on, we have to go,” I murmured, scooping her up briefly before setting her back down and hurrying toward the door.
Outside, I found my twin brother, Sirius, waiting impatiently at the bottom of the steps, his expression a mixture of amusement and concern. “Come on now, Mum's mad,” he whispered urgently, glancing back toward the house as if fearing our mother would appear at any moment.
"I’m coming! I overslept," I shot back, my voice a mix of exasperation and urgency.
“Then hustle!” he urged, and we both rushed down the path, the soft thud of our footsteps mingling with the morning air, hearts racing as we prepared for the day ahead.
Arriving at the bustling train station, the familiar scent of engine smoke and the distant echo of voices surrounded us. We moved through the crowd of eager families and students, navigating to the barrier that marked the entry to Platform 9¾. As we approached, Mum began her usual lecture, the “if I get any owls” speech, her eyes narrowed as she cautioned us about behaving.
I noticed Sirius zoning out, his attention shifting to a boy nearby. Turning my head, I spotted a kid with a buzz cut dressed in a typical Muggle outfit, his mismatched clothing, a glaring testament to his non-magical roots. When he caught our gaze, he smirked and stuck his chin out, making an exaggerated, ugly face. Sirius couldn’t help but return the smirk, a playful glint in his eyes.
Just then, Mum’s voice sliced through the chatter. “Boys, come here at once!” she declared, her tone leaving no room for argument, as she yanked us towards a quieter corner to continue her lecture.
After what felt like an eternity, her rant tapered off, and we were finally released to seek our own adventures. We weaved through the crowd, eyes peeled for a suitable compartment. Eventually, we found a door ajar, revealing a compartment occupied by a short blonde kid with striking water-coloured eyes and a bespectacled boy with messy hair and deep brown eyes.
"None of you are related to us, are you?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.
The boy with glasses furrowed his brow. “Don’t think so,” he replied, sounding somewhat perplexed by the question.
“James Potter,” he said, extending his hand with an infectious confidence. Sirius shook it first, a playful grin spreading across his face, and I followed suit, offering my hand.
“Oh good, a Potter. Dad told us not to talk to you,” I remarked, a teasing lilt in my voice as I slipped into an open seat beside James.
“Heracles Black,” I introduced myself, and as if on cue, Sirius piped up with a smirk, “Sirius Black,” as he settled on the opposite bench next to the boy with the buzz cut.
And that marked the end of the first chapter of our journey, a segment filled with the clamour of youth and the beginnings of friendships that would weave through our lives. It’s always the hardest to write, but I felt a flicker of excitement for what was to come. What do you think of Heracles and the way his story begins?
