"She is your daughter."
Juliette wants a hole to appear and allow her to sink in. She wants to disappear.
"She's not my daughter!" Matthew screams from the top of his lungs.
Juliette sat beside her mother and inhaled a shaky breath. Her hands firmly clench together, and she stares at the ground.
She thought she would've gotten used to Matthew's rejection by now, but it somehow still hurts.
Her mother smiled, unaffected by Matthew's words. Juliette isn't surprise. This isn't the first time her mother wrecked a home, and Juliette is certain, it wouldnt be the last.
She smiled at Nina, "Hello, I'm Melanie."
Nina gave her the nastiest glare in the world. She tried to steady her breathing, but she couldn't believe how Melanie would come unannounced.
"I understand," Melanie crosses her legs. "I wouldn't greet the woman who is the mother of my husband's illegitimate child, either."
Nina ground her molars against one another. There wasn't a single thought in her head; she's running on a single pure emotion - anger.
"I haven't had the pleasure to congratulate you." Melanie's eyes went towards the door, and all the boys went into hiding before it went back towards Nina. "I apologize for my inability to make it to the wedding. My invite seems to be misplaced."
"It was a private wedding," Matthew said. He needs to figure out how to mend this problem.
Melanie clenches her jaw, "It seems that we aren't particularly welcome here."
We?
"Your intuition isn't inaccurate," dad responds.
Maybe, we.
Matthew and Melanie enter a stare-off, and without a response from the two talkers in the room, everything went silent.
"What exactly do you want?" Matthew was tired of asking the same question over and over. If they take somethint, anything, all of this wouldn't be a problem in the first place.
Melanie places a hand on her chest. "Me? Nothing. I wasn't the one who came here." She turns her head towards Juliette. "Don't be rude. Your dad asks you what you want."
Juliette knows it isn't Matthew who's being rude. It was her mother - coming in unannounced and uninvited.
Juliette bit her lower lip, "I wanted to know what dad looks like." She twists her shirt. If Melanie came here, it must mean she knew who Juliette's father is, doesn't she? Now, there's the question - why didn't Melanie come forward to tell her who he is? "I wanted to know why dad left us."
Matthew exhales before his gaze cast towards Nina.
She didn't acknowledge him.
"Look," Matthew said. "If...If you are my daughter. I apologize for leaving you. I didn't know."
The words, whether it was the truth or not, lighten the burden in her heart. If he really didn't know her existence, it meant he didn't really leave her.
Juliette bit her lower lip, "What about mom? Why did you leave her?"
He releases another breath, most likely trying to calm himself down. "I don't love your mother."
Juliette knew that.
"But, mom said you love her."
But, she needed confirmation.
