As in infant in your arms
she seems so quiet
and so innocent and oblivious
to all the worlds wilds
and you sigh, content
and you sit for a while
a child in your arms,
protected from denial

She toddles around
young yet adept
and you smile again
as she strides to the vanity
she wants to be pretty like mommy
to be grown and mature
before her time is procured
and you sit with a loss of words

Her first day of school
she sits on the stool
and laughs because he’s different
but she is not reprimanded
so his thoughts are commanded
by the way that she acts
he must be normal, get on track

and in grade six she sees on TV
a girl so thin and skinny
the epitome of beauty
the illumination of starvation
she believes this is what she must be
a size 00 not a size 3
so she does what she must
a cut of carbs and calories
she cuts out the works
but still they call her fat
and they call her gross
and all she really wants
is for someone to notice

You tell her it’s a phase
she’ll feel better with time
and as she finds herself
she gain the signs
that she has grown up and matured
you tell her she’s beautiful
but what do you know
You birthed her, You have to think so

But eventually she finds herself
lost, she is no more
Yet society cannot let her
again she must fall
so they tell her she doesn’t know
they tell her she’s wrong
because she’s a simple minded child
who doesn’t know her place at all

She begins to doubt
who is the girl she thought she saw
who is the person who suddenly knew it all
and how could she be comfortable in her own skin
how could you let it happen
how could you let her sin

She hates you
for everything you are worth
and how can you understand
when you’re perfect with all thats unearthed

How can you let her
take in herself
and round it all
and love herself again

How can you let her
be who she wants
and see eye to eye
on the same level

How can you let her
teach others to love themselves
and fight off the disease
killing all these teens

How can you let her
save the lives
of all the others
while again she writhes
in internal pain

How can you let them
lower her casket into the ground
while they tell you that you did what you could
How could you have known what she was going though

And how can we let them
tell us how we should act and look
and how we should be
How can we let them push us further and further
until the edge looks dearer and dearer
and you jump off that edge
into the cold cool waters full of calm
how can you let them kill you like that

How can we let them hurt us
