That day, tragedy struck, but Nezuko was unaware of the situation she would have to return home to.

"Thank you, Saburo! I will be on my way now." Nezuko bowed as she thanked the man who allowed her to stay the night. She waved on her way out, grinning, "Bye!"

"Of course, now stay safe on the walk back." Saburo nodded, waving to the girl as she started her journey back up the mountain.

Nezuko nodded, starting her trek back to her family home.

On her back she bare a bamboo twined basket, large enough to fit herself in. It was empty, although the day before it had carried charcoal which she sold in the village at the base of the mountain.

Nezuko wore her favorite kimono, a pink one with black detailing running through it. She usually wore this kimono when she was out of the house, as she loved the look of it. Her hair was neatly put into a low bun, her to-do styling to keep it out of the way, yet still pretty.

Every step she took closer to her home, more and more anticipation coursed through her, excited to see her siblings again. She often did this job, although she wasn't usually alone. Her little siblings were always overjoyed to tag along, and her elder brother would help whenever they brought the wagon, since he could rest on it whenever needed.

Nezuko's older brother, Tanjiro, wasn't a typical kid. When he was young, when Nezuko had only recently been born, Tanjiro had faced a horrible injury to his leg, causing permanent damage. Due to this, he can't walk for long periods of time without rest. So, Nezuko performs the jobs Tanjiro would've done, although he still insists on helping with things that don't require much leg work.

Nezuko's heart warms as her mind wanders to her loving memories of playing outside her family home with her siblings. She smiles softly as she walks, knowing she's nearly home!

As the girl approached her home, something daunting had fallen upon her. A scent wafted towards her, the wind slowly pushing it down the mountain. The dreadfully familiar scent of..

Blood.

Nezuko's eyes went wide, and her smile was wiped off her face. The previous pleasant smell of fresh snow on the forest floor was quickly replaced by that horrifying scent.

Immediately she broke into a sprint, knowing that the smell came from her home, although she did her best to deny it. Nezuko could only hope the scene she returned home to wasn't the one she could smell.

Getting to the clearing where her family stayed, Nezuko laid her eyes upon a horrific sight.

"No.." Her voice started as a denying whisper.

She dropped the bamboo basket and rushed towards her older brother who held the youngest close. She collapsed to the ground beside them. "No!"

Nezuko's whisper turned to a desperate shout as she furrowed her brows, holding back tears. She looked frantically at her brothers who were covered in blood.

Her breaths were uneven and mortified. She didn't want to look into the bloody entrance to the house.. Nezuko didn't want to be forced to accept the truth. She wanted to deny it, she wanted to live blissfully, never truly knowing if her family had died that day.

But she knew the truth...

Nezuko stood up, stumbling to the doorway, peering inside the house she once called home.

That sight. The sight of her little siblings, lying lifeless on the ground. The floor and walls practically drenched in blood.

Tears started to stream down her face, her mind went quiet for a few seconds as she processed what she just saw. Nezuko's body crumpled to the floor as she sobbed. Her brain started racing, and all she could do was panic. Nezuko hesitantly stood and made her way to each of her family member's sides.
