I tried my best not to stutter as I introduced myself, saying, "Ah, I'm a student at Maine Central School. My name is Kim. Nice to meet you,"
"Yeah, so your aunt is Ms. Jennifer?" I nodded in confirmation, smiling. "Yeah, you know my aunt?" I asked him. "Well, this is a small neighborhood; everyone knows everyone. I'm Drake, nice to meet you, girly," he continued, then added, "Now, Damon is not the only Asian here at school. "I was a little shocked and turned to look at Damon, who had now tied his hair into a bun and was walking deeper into the building. "Really?" I replied, still looking at Drake. "Well, he's half Chinese. But why are you here?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "Well, Damon led me here.
Mr. White told me he's my tour guide," I explained." ah-huh, well, this is our hideout, and no one can come in unless you're a member of the band," Drake explained, smirking. "A band? That's cool!" I exclaimed, my excitement showing.
"What type of band are you? I like listening to Ms. Kitten whenever they release a new cover. How about the Verdana band? Do you listen to them too? Because I listen to them too! Have you already heard their new song?" My energetic response seemed to startle Drake, and he raised both hands in front of him, signaling for me to calm down.
"Woah, calm down, girly," he said with a chuckle. I smiled at him and laughed, realizing I might have gotten a bit carried away with my enthusiasm. "I'm sorry, I become like this when someone has the same interest as me," I apologized, feeling a bit embarrassed. My face flushed with embarrassment, worrying that I might have come across as weird to these new acquaintances. "No need to apologize," Drake reassured me with a friendly grin. "Passion for music is always a good thing. " He then glanced at Damon, then to me "Looks like you like progressive metal bands. Do you want my recommendation?" he asked with a smile. I nodded eagerly, my embarrassment fading away. I felt a bit more at ease as Drake's warm demeanor put me at ease.
It seemed like I was starting to make connections at my new school, even if my initial enthusiasm had caught them off guard. We found a place to sit outside and started talking. Drake shared his recommendations and gave me an overview of the bands he enjoyed, and I listened intently, genuinely interested in the music he was introducing me to. As our conversation continued, my curiosity got the better of me, and I asked Drake about his role in the band. He told me that he was the drummer, and Damon played the guitar. I nodded, taking it all in. He then asked me if I knew how to play any instruments, to which I replied that I didn't know how to play any instruments. Drake simply nodded in understanding. I went on to explain that my parents weren't musically inclined, and I simply enjoyed listening to music. I confessed that I tended to get bored quickly and learning to play an instrument would require a lot of time and effort that I wasn't sure I could commit to. "Hey, let's go," Damon said, slinging a guitar case onto his back.
Drake and Damon started talking about a topic I wasn't familiar with, so I simply followed them to wherever they were heading. They continued walking towards the back of the school, and I followed them, feeling a bit hesitant. It was morning, and classes were starting. As I watched Drake climb over the fence, Damon handed him his guitar, cradling it gently. Damon looked at me and asked, "You coming?" I hesitated for a moment. I couldn't afford to cut classes; studying was one of the reasons my aunt wanted me here.
"Are you guys cutting classes?" I asked, stating the obvious. Damon shot me a look that seemed to say, "What do you think?" before he climbed the fence. "Don't tell this to anyone if you cherish your senior life here," he warned before disappearing on the other side with Drake. I was left standing alone, unable to see them anymore due to the high fence and concrete wall. I decided to head back towards the school, casting a few cautious glances behind me as I walked. Since Damon hadn't given me a complete tour of the school and had only pointed out the cafeteria and their hideout, I wandered the school on my own to find my class. When I stood in front of 11-C, I felt nervous and unsure of what to do. I could hear the teacher inside already, and I wasn't sure whether to knock or wait for her lesson to finish.
Then, someone spoke from behind me, and I jumped in surprise. It seemed like people enjoyed startling others here. I turned to find a pretty girl in a school uniform. "Are you a new student, Ms. Kim? Mr. White told me that Damon should be with you. Where is he?" she asked, looking confused while I was standing alone. I hesitated, unsure whether to tell her that Damon had cut classes with Drake or to keep it to myself. We locked eyes for a couple of awkward minutes. She chuckled a little, and it sounded cute. I hoped my chuckle would be just as charming. "Never mind," she said, breaking the silence. "This is your room, right?" I nodded, and she knocked on the door and open it a little. "Sorry, Mrs. Moore, you have a new student," she called to the teacher.
Then she pulled me closer so the teacher could see me. "Oh, how nice. Thank you, Candace," the teacher replied with a warm smile. Candace then moved away and started walking off. The teacher turned to me and asked, "Can I see your registration form please?" I nodded and began looking for my registration form to hand it over.
