"Leave them to us," Clive commanded, raising his arm to signal you to stay back. The anticipation of the battle filled the air as you heard Jill ready her sword, preparing to engage the monsters ahead. With purpose in your step, you graciously moved around Clive, your own sword at the ready. A wry smile crossed your lips as you responded, "If you think I've spent the past thirteen years idly, my lord, you're mistaken." You raised your weapon, a sharp whistle cutting through the air as you swung it in a graceful arc. With precision, you aimed at one of the Cray Claws, your grip on the hilt firm as you released the sword with unwavering force. It struck the creature's head with deadly accuracy, felling it with a single blow. In one swift motion, you retrieved your sword, ready to face the next opponent.
You turned towards another monster, your determination unwavering, even as you chuckled at Clive and Jill's impressed reactions. "Am I to have all the fun alone?" you called out to them, breaking them from their momentary awe.
With newfound resolve, Clive and Jill joined the fray, the three of you working together to take down the remaining foes.
The air was filled with the sounds of fierce combat as you and your companions engaged the remaining giant-sized scorpions, which surrounded the rocky cliff where Bernard had taken refuge. Your main objective was to divert these oversized arachnids away from the carpenter, ensuring his safety. Although their numbers appeared overwhelming, they were no match for your determined group.
Approaching the final foe, you thrust your weapon into it, relentlessly attacking until the creature could no longer stand. The battle had been taxing, and you paused to catch your breath, beads of sweat forming on your brow.
"Over here!" Bernard's voice called out from a distance, grabbing your attention.
You, Jill, and Clive swiftly turned your gazes towards him and rushed over to his side.
"Thank you, my lady! You saved my life!" Bernard exclaimed gratefully.
You and Jill exchanged puzzled glances before Jill took the initiative. "Not at all. You're Bernard, the carpenter, yes?"
"I am. Though I didn't realize my name was known so widely..." Bernard answered with a hint of surprise in his voice.
"I'm a friend of Martha's. She asked us to come and find you," you chimed in.
"Well, I'm very grateful for it. I'd just finished checking these piles when I turned around and saw a gang of slavering monsters looking to feast on my flesh. If you hadn't come when you did, I'd've been snipped into strips by now," Bernard replied, his voice filled with relief.
"We're just glad you're safe," Jill said, echoing the sentiments of all three of you.
"I best go and give my regards to the landlady then, eh?" Bernard inquired.
"Actually, she asked that if we found you, we should beg you to make haste to repair the bridge to Eastpool," Jill replied.
"Of course! I said I'd take a look at it, but it clean slipped my mind. I'll head up there straightaway!" Bernard said before taking off towards the bridge.
The rest of you followed not far behind, and when you arrived, you could see the unfinished bridge with a giant hole that prevented crossing.
After studying the state of the current stage of the bridge, Bernard turned towards the three of you. "The trusses are still sturdy—it's just a matter of replacing the stringers and relining the deck. I'll have it done in no time."
"Thank you, Bernard. We were hoping to take the road to Eastpool ourselves. We're very grateful for your help—and sorry for asking this of you after what you've been through," Jill responded.
