Chapter Six

I land face-first on a concrete floor.

It doesn't hurt a lot, but I think I hit my nose. Lilliana comes in right after me, and she helps me up. I look up at her. She looks right back at me, but something about her makes me feel weird. Like she's someone I recognize.

"Let's hop to it, dear," Lilliana says. I refuse to cry. We just keep going down a long hallway full of doors and other hallways that lead to more doors. She doesn't stop for anything-she turns a few rights and then a left all without giving us a break. "Just down here. He hasn't seen anyone much, so be careful. He's probably going to be so happy you, though."

I kind of feel like a secret agent, it's all so new and exciting. But should I be going somewhere without letting anyone know? Lilliana knows, so this shouldn't be so bad.

Lilliana opens a door straight into a room full of pipes and a few tools that have been scattered around. She walks in and searches for something before giving me the okay to come in. We both walk further into the room. We walk in front of a large pipe-one that can fit about ten garden trees if they were shoved in.

"Ray! Ray, I have a new friend with me! Please come meet her!" Lilliana exclaims at the pipe. A slow rumbling sound echoes across the room until a new puppet appears in the pipe.

The puppet-he must be Ray, I guess-grumbles at Lilliana and looks at me cautiously. He mumbles something to Lilliana that I can't understand, and she nods.

"(Y/N) is a gentle one. She wouldn't hurt anyone, wouldn't you, dear?"

I shake my head. Yeah, I wouldn't hurt anyone! The only times I did, it was all an accident.

But what about...

No. That wasn't an accident. It was real.

"Fine," Ray says.

I smile at him. He still seems a bit bothered, but, other than that, he's okay with me.

"Say, where's Junebug? She's usually down here with you," Lilliana asks. Ray shrugs. "Hm. Maybe she's in the playground. We haven't seen her in a few hours."

Ray hides in the pipe once again. Lilliana looks at me, her hand tightening around mine. I stay still, knowing how much this hurts. She realizes what she's doing and stops, pulling her hand away from mine. She leads us back up the stairs and out of the underground. I see a couple dogs in the parking lot, and Lilliana freezes. She's shaking.

I tiptoe around the dogs without them noticing me, and I signal for her to follow me. She looks at me as if I'm insane but follows me anyway. She hugs herself, still shaking, and leads the way to the playground. The lights are dim, but I can see someone running around.

"Wait here, (Y/N)," Lilliana says.

"(Y/N)!"

Who's whispering to me?

"Over here!"
