i'd like to make a promise
that you will get a much better
upbringing than me,
that you will have a forever supportive
and caring family,
that you will never feel
out of place
or misunderstood by everyone,
that you will not have to
bear any trauma
early in your life
that will affect you in later years,
and i will do all i can
to make sure
what happened to me
won't happen to you.
