Yao squeezes the red diamond shaped necklace they were wearing, almost breaking it in the process.

Letting go of it, they stared at their nervous expression reflecting off the crimson gemstone.

Yao was gifted the necklace when they were younger. It’s their most precious possession. They couldn’t fathom the chaos that would ensue if it shattered or fell off. No, they couldn’t handle the thought of them possibly destroying everything they laid their eyes on.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Yao quickly shut the library book and tossed it in the nightstand next to their bed, and rushed to the door.

Outside on the small wooden porch was a short girl. She had light brown hair, freckles, and blue eyes.

“Oh, hi, Julianne.” Yao said, relieved.

Julianne smiled, “Come on Yaoooo!” She groaned, “I thought you would be happier to see me!”

Yao chuckles, “Who said I wasn’t?”

“Your face.” She smirks.

Yao punches her shoulder, “Come in, you goof, I have something to show you.”

They walk inside the house, Julianne right behind. They open the nightstand and pull out the book.

“Another book? Do you need me to do another ritual on you or something?”

“Not exactly.” They flip to the page they were previously on and point.

Julianne recited what she read aloud, “Shadow Lurker.”

Yao nods, “Keep reading.”

“Shadow Lurker: An entity that chooses a puppet at a young age, whether or not animal or human.” Her eyes go wide, and she turns to look at Yao.

“This might be it. This could be a lead.” Yao says, trying to hide their enthusiasm.

Julianne looked worried, “Is it, though?”

Yao froze, “W-What..?” was all they could get to come out of their mouth. They weren’t even sure if Julianne heard them.

“It’s just… every time we think we find a cure, it never ends up working out.”

Yao felt the rage begin to build up, “We don’t know until we try, Julianne.”

“But-“

“How do you know, anyways? It’s not like you’re the one with the curse!”

“Yao, I-“

Yao continues to yell at Julianne for what seems like forever.

YAO!!” She finally screams.

Yao froze again, realizing what they just did, “Julianne, I-“

“Save it. I was just trying to protect you from getting hurt again.” She walks out of the house, slamming the door behind her.

Yao slumps to the ground.

“Dammit.”
The room began to blur, and Yao realizes they’re crying.

“DAMMIT, DAMMIT, DAMMIT!!
The room isn’t just blurry anymore. It begins to spin as well.

“…WAIT!!” They scream, but it’s too late.

The darkness had already surrounded them.
