Leo never expected to live past 20. He supposed he was okay with it, I mean fighting supervillains? Maybe he’d live to 43. But when he and his brothers fought the Shredder? He thought he’d kick the bucket at 15. Surprisingly he managed to defeat him, so maybe there was a chance that maybe, just maybe he’d be able to grow old and live a life of simplicity like normal people or mutants do. But it died out and it was like it never existed when the Krang invaded. Because something deep inside of him knew that the most he was going to live to, was 16. And he knew he was going to die despite anything he tried to do. So every plan he made when the invasion happened was based on the assumption that he wasn’t going to survive and his family and Casey Jr. would. The first one was ruined when Raph saved him. And it just kept going downhill. He was getting saved and his brothers weren’t or they were getting into situations that Leo made. Suddenly, Donnie and Mikey were falling and Raph leaped for them leaving Leo to fight Krang One by himself.

This is where you die, like you are supposed to

His brain reminded him in a whimsical voice.

That's right, here was where he’d give his life so his brothers could live theirs. That's perfect! His brothers would be fine without their Faceman, and plus, Raph would be the leader again. He was always so better at it than Leo, and Raph had always told Leo how he should become a better leader. Something dark and ugly twisted itself in Leo’s stomach, he just reminded himself that he wouldn’t need to become better. He’d just needed to be

Gone

So that's what Leo did. He removed himself by locking himself away in the Prison Dimension with him . Now he was floating as his life ebbed away from him at an agonizingly slow pace. It drained from his sides, his mouth, his head, his shell, him. He held the photo to his chest as he thought about his brothers. Now that he actually wasn’t going to make it out, he was scared. But not for him, for his brothers. There were so many things he wished he could say, but some things felt too long, too short, or just not right. A memory hazily made its way to his mind. Despite the fogginess in his brain he managed to hang on to it

“Donnie, look at this beautiful, boring book I found that your big forehead might enjoy” Leo sang in a teasing voice as he sauntered over to where his twin brother sat. Plopping onto the beanbag right next to him, he held it up with a smug smile. It was a poetry book that he was planning to give to his brother for their 17th birthday but he was too impatient so he decided to give it to Donnie now. Leo felt his soul light up when Donnie gave him an awe-filled look and snatched it out of his hands. Muttering a quick “greedy” he leaned on Donnie’s shoulder to look at the book even though he’d already looked through it. It just felt different when he shared it with someone who enjoyed something that he gave. Donnie had flipped through it and stopped on a random page to express how Leo actually could give something useful but Leo wasn’t listening. Instead, he was looking at the quote with an unreadable expression. This one made him feel…calm, like a nice cold bucket of water on a hot day

“It’s not the good that die young, It’s the lucky”

-Mark Twain

Leo wasn’t suicidal, not in the slightest. He just knew that it wasn’t life he was looking forward to, nor was it death. It was peace, and here it was, glowing in front of him and wrapping him in a blanket and telling him it was all okay now and it was here now to save him. So he listened and closed his eyes as he reached out.

And he let go

…Just as someone grabbed on
