Chapter 18

"Trey, what's going on?"

Trey Warton, his best friend, was throwing him a worried look while Angela was, again, shooting daggers at me with narrowed eyes and her arms crossed. Before I could ask her why she was giving me the cold shoulder, Angela marched up to me and punched me in the face.

The hit was so hard, I lost my balance and fell back into Olive's arms. I held my poor cheek in my hands where a bruise was, for sure, forming.

"How dare you steal my boyfriend away from me?!" Her voice was thick with tears.

"I have no idea what you're talking about!"

"Bullshit! It's clear as day that you're in love with Kayden!" The sweet girl that was at Zach's house was long gone. In her place stood an angry, heartbroken girl that yearned for revenge. She was seconds away from throwing more punches until the boys stood in front of me as shields. Kayden stuck his arm out with the palm facing Angela as if to keep her at arm's length away from me.

"Angey, why don't we talk about this in private?"

It was then that I noticed all eyes were on me and the scene unfolding in front of them. Being the center of attention was not on the list of what I enjoyed. Especially if tonight was supposed to be all about the birthday girl. Heat spread through my cheeks and neck. A spotlight might as well be cast on me.

"Everyone's already watching," Angela shrugged. "We might as well give them a show." She smiled through the tears and scoffed.

"I'm not surprised. The three of you have been the best of buddies since kindergarten. You have history together. You were bound to have fallen in love with her too. You spend every damn second with her."

That was an over exaggeration. But there was no way I was going to add fuel to the fire that was already blowing up.

"You don't know anything about her."

"I don't need to know. All I know is that she's taking you away from me." She was more sad than she was angry now. Three or more tears had fallen from her eyes and she sniffled into the back of her hand.

Even though Angela didn't handle her feelings that well, I still felt bad for her. I thought she was using him as a toy to show off in front of her friends. She was handsy with him, always flirting and making out with him every chance she got.

It turned out, she actually really liked him. If I were in her shoes, I'd be heartbroken too. Not angry enough to punch the daylights out of someone, but I would be heartbroken.

Especially after she was so nice to me the night of the party when they came over to Zach's and greeted me with the biggest hug. She was kind enough to insist on singing us happy birthday and looked genuinely remorseful that she didn't get us presents. Now, she was probably regretting ever doing that for me since she knew about her boyfriend's secret feelings.

Shit!

Garrett!

I looked at him and saw a similar somber expression etched into his features. His eyes were glossy with unshed tears accumulating, his arms were crossed and his head was downcast, avoiding eye contact with me.

This was exactly what I didn't want. To break his heart. Like he felt my eyes on him, his head slowly turned to face me with a glowered expression flashing in his eyes. His chest was heaving up and down and he was becoming red with anger. "You told me you never had feelings for him."

I gulped. My throat ached each time I swallowed and choked back sobs. I was wracked with guilt the longer I stared into his sullen eyes, but I couldn't stay silent. "I'm so... so, so sorry for hurting you—"
