I was waiting outside the city, leaning on the wall with my hair falling over my shoulder in long waves as I brushed a hand through it when Jack exited the city while holding a little bag, which had me to look at it in wonder at what he got for the horse hoping it will be money for the roof so uncle does not lecture us about being irresponsible again, "what are those?" I question as Jack looks at me in surprise at me still being here, which has us begin the walk home, "beans" he tells me as I go wide-eyed on such a thing, "beans?" question I know uncle will kill us for this one for sure, "uncle is sure to be pleased about this" I whisper under my breath as we continue our way home as I know we are in for a lecture.
We make it home in the afternoon for us to sit at the table with my hands in my lap as I play with my skirt with my eyes downcast, "I don't ask for much...... in return for all those years I put food in your belly's...... clothes on your back's, a roof over your head's. So, what do I have to show for it? Beans." uncle was telling us as I look to Jack as my eyes are sadly looking at him, he has done it this time, "I'll take them to the abbey tomorrow and tell the monks what happened." Jack tells our uncle as I gulp at what Jack implies, "You believe that story?" Uncle questions as I look at my brother a little, "I mean, he was a monk." Jack answered as I knew he was not pleading his case, "Because he wore a robe? Funny haircut?" Uncle questions, as I know it is not a good point to think about.
Most people can look like that and still rob you blind, "Yeah. No." Jack answered as I looked at Uncle and Jack, "Monks have no money. They're monks! The man robbed you! Jack, you have got to grow up. You're 18 years old." Uncle tells my brother, and then he looks at me with scorn on his face, "and you should know better, Daisy, leaving your brother like that," he tells me as I look at my hands again, feeling his disappointment, "yes uncle, I'm sorry" I get out as I feel like I should not have left my brother's side when looking for the cart, "Just like your father. Head's in the clouds. Useless!" uncle says to knock the beans off the table as I go wide-eyed as I scramble to the ground helping my brother pick them up, "Look, I can fix this. I promise." Jack voices as I nod on that as I feel like we can put this in the past, "Too late for that." Uncle says as he goes over to the trunk that he opens.
"Nothing left to fix. Never thought it'd come to this. Your parents' things. Should fetch a few weeks' worth at the market. Take my legs half the night...... to get there with no horse." Uncle was saying as he bagged mother's and father's things with me, standing up with me wishing he would not do so, "Uncle, please, you can't sell those. They aren't yours to sell." I tell him as uncle looks at me with narrowed eyes, knowing they are mother's and father's things, they are ours, "Horse was. Cart too. Jack, Daisy, it was a simple task. Sell the horse, buy some thatch, fix the roof. You've got to take responsibility." uncle tells us as I grip my hands into fists on such words, "Darkest day of my life...... the day I lost your father to the plague." uncle was saying as he puts his coat on. His hat as well, "Made worse...... by the plague he left me." Uncle says as he leaves us. Tears come to my waterline as I look to the ground and then climb the ladder to sit at the top with my hair falling over my face, hating the fact that we are a burden to him.
Thunder rumbles outside as I sit by the window sewing Jack's pants that have holes in them with the feeling of loss on mother's and father's things being sold at the market. At least I still have the necklace my mother gave me when I was just a child, which I stroke a little, hoping our luck will turn around. Jack opens the door as it is a downpour outside, which has my brother hanging the lantern out for our uncle to see his way home, "Come on. You're not that stubborn, old man." Jack breaths out as I look at him with a raised brow at such words, "I beg to differ", I answer as Jack looks at me as he closes the door, which has me sitting there in pants, knowing skirts are not my thing;
I move better when I am in pants, which has me looking back to my work, not in the mood for Jack. He has upset me on all this little venture, "Daisy, I'm sorry", Jack tells me as I sigh at him apologising, which has me place down my work, looking over to my brother on such a thing, "it's fine Jack" I answer as I hold up my work that I nod at when Jack picks up an apple to begin eating it, "What?" I heard Jack say as I looked over to him, seeing him looking at the cat watching him, who then meows, which made me smile a little at him, "Fine. I'll go after him." Jack tells the cat, and then he looks at me as I put the sewing kit away, "stay here, Daisy, I won't be long", he tells me as I nod, "be safe, Jack", I tell him as my brother puts his jacket on.
But when my brother was to open the door, someone opened it as well, and I heard a lady who had me put the pants away looking out from my place, "I'm sorry to disturb you, but I saw...... your light, and I'm lost." the woman tells us as I look at her with the tilt of my head as I stand up from my spot, "Well, come in, please." Jack invites the lady in as she looks around, which has me wondering why she was out in such a storm. Jack closes the door as he looks to the lady who takes off her coat, which is soaked to the bone, "I'm Jack, and that's my sister Daisy." Jack introduces us as I smile at the girl who looks at my brother for me to look at her; it's Princess Isabelle which has my brother connect the dots quickly as he seems surprised at her being here, "How do you do, Jack?" the Princess greets with her shaking my brother's hand, "and you too Dasiy" Isabelle greets me shaking my hand as I feel shocked on the Princess shaking my hand, "What are you doing out in this weather?" I question as the Princess looks at me on such a question "Well, it wasn't like this when I set out. The storm...... just crept up on me." the Princess tells us as she walks around the room, "What, and you just saw my light?" Jack questions as I roll my eyes at such a question, "Yes." the Princess answers, "You were out riding alone?" I question as she looks to me a little on such a question, "At the moment." Isabelle tells us as I look at my brother on such a girl being out at this time, "Do you do that often?"
Jack then asks her, which has me look back at the Princess, who chuckles at such a question, "Is this your farm?" she then questions as I am standing with my brother with my hands in front of me, "Yes." Jack says as I look at him with frowned brows, knowing that is untrue, "No. Sort of. My uncle, Daisy and I are tenant farmers. We just work the land." Jack answers as I know it is the truth. It would be lovely to own this farm, "And, uh, these books?" Isabelle questions, as I know that Jack reads to me more than he can count the days. It keeps the memory of my mother and father alive in my brain when I am missing them deeply, "Yeah, they're mine." Jack answers as he is watching the Princess who is in this home and looking at everything as she holds a book, "It's unusual...... for a farm boy." the Princess tells my brother, "Judging by the cover...... are we?" Jack questions with a smile on his features. This is gross to watch, which has me leave them to talk to sit by the fire as I dust some hair away from my vision, "What do you like reading?" she then questions as I feel like this is not the place I wish to be right now, "I like a good adventure."
Jack answers as the Princess is looking at a book that she picked up, "In books or in life?" she then questions as I roll my eyes at such words, hoping one day to have an adventure outside of this place, "Till I can find a way to get off this farm, I have to settle for books." Jack answers as I hear him say ow, which has me smile a little at him being burnt by a candle, "And, uh, that mark on your face...... was that an adventure?" the Princess asks as I look a little her on that knowing that it was in some ways yes, "I, um, got in a fight today. At the market." Jack answers as I put more wood on the fire, "What about?" the Princess asks as I feel like this is sure to be fun, "I was defending the honour of the princess." Jack answers as I know that was the way it was, which has her chuckle, "Princess? Really? You sure you didn't read that in one of your books? How did you know it was the princess?" the girl questions as I look over to the cat who was looking at the water building up in one of the bowls which has me to tilt my head on what it is looking at, "I didn't. Just saw she needed help. It wasn't until the Guardians showed up... ... that I realized who she was. Anyway, it happened very fast. I wouldn't blame her if she didn't remember me. What are you running away from?" Jack questions as I sigh and look back to the fire, "Who says I'm running away? Maybe I'm running toward something. Just looking for an adventure of my own." she tells us, passing the book to my brother as I look up at her, "Well, so far, you've run toward the light on my porch...... Your Highness." Jack says as I go over to my brother to bow down with him when she puts her coat on.
