Another rejection.
Izuku stared at the email, the words blurring together. We regret to inform you that your application for our nursery program has been declined. He let out a slow breath, rubbing his temples.
"I thought it'd be easier now that he's almost four... but I guess I'll have to wait until he turns five." His voice was barely above a whisper.
He glanced toward the small play area in the living room, where Sho sat cross-legged, stacking blocks. He was talking to himself as he played, his tiny hands carefully placing one block over another. Izuku smiled, but it was tinged with sadness.
"It'd be nice if he could make some friends."
He had been trying to get Sho into a nursery for months now. If Sho could start school, Izuku could finally look for a job. He didn't want to rely on the money Todoroki sent them forever. It was already humiliating enough that he had to depend on him after everything.
His phone buzzed. Todoroki's name flashed on the screen.
Izuku frowned. He doesn't usually call at this time... did something happen?
"Hello?" He picked up quickly. "Todoroki-kun? You don't usually call at this time of the day. Is something wrong?"
"Everything is okay, don't worry." Todoroki's voice was calm but firm. "I just called to tell you I'm in Japan today."
Izuku shot up from the couch. "What? You... you're joking!"
"No. I have a meeting at the main office. After that, I'll be free for a couple of hours. I want to come home."
Izuku's throat went dry.
"Come home?" The words felt foreign.
"Is there a problem?"
"N-no... no problem," Izuku stammered. "It's just... we haven't met in almost five years. This is so sudden that I- I can't believe it."
Todoroki chuckled softly. "I can't wait to see you."
Izuku forced a smile. "Me too."
But as soon as he hung up, reality crashed down on him.
Sho.
Izuku hadn't told Sho about his father. He didn't know why. Maybe it was resentment. Maybe it was fear. But for four and a half years, he had never once mentioned Todoroki's name. He had only told Sho that his dad lived far away.
Sho had never even seen a picture of him. Izuku had deleted every single one.
What would happen if they suddenly met?
His hands were shaking. He couldn't do this. It was too much. He looked at Sho, who was now playing with a stuffed rabbit. Mom... I need to call Mom.
He dialed quickly.
"Hello, Izuku, dear. Is everything okay?"
"Mom, are you free this afternoon?"
"Yes, do you need help?"
