Mitsuha's father was a scientist. He was doing experiments on animals illegally. Once he invented a virus and wanted to try it. He targeted his daughter Mitsuha and started giving her a small amount of virus each day but unfortunately no effect was shown on her.
This act of Mitsuha's father was seen by Mitsuha's mother. She snubbed him and asked for divorce.
Mitsuha's father was already a failed scientist and he wasn't able to bear this. So he decided to test that virus on his own. He took a heavy dosage of that and he died.
Some pleasant years passed but now that small amount of virus in Mitsuha's body has multiplied to 94 different ones.
Her mum revealed this in front of the government and said, " I'm the only one who's responsible because I didn't kill her earlier, but now I'll become the human bomb and will destroy the whole land."
This is how Mitsuha's mum carried the bomb on her belly and bombed the whole city. The Graceful Shanghai City was now the land of the deads.
