"This is speaking."
'This is thoughts.'Her eyes peered down the long road. The only light source came from the flashlight as the moon had now been covered by the dark clouds. Morgan still had a tight grip on the sleeve of her jacket. The both of them were walking slower, their legs sore and tired. They had been walking along the side of the road for some time now and still no cars had driven past them.
Dry grass lined the edge of the road. The cracked concrete had little potholes in it that would fill up with water if it were to rain. Long stretched fields lined by fences surrounded them.
Their stomachs grumbled and their throats began to hurt when they swallowed because of how dry their mouths felt. All of [name]'s fingertips had become sore after she had picked at the skin around each one. She pushed down on the sensitive skin, and a stinging sensation shot through her fingers. But she ignored the pain, too focused on the dark shadows around her. Both girls halted their steps as they came across another road. A sign was standing tall on the grass; they quickly walked over to it.
[Name] looked down at Morgan and waited for an answer as to what it said on the sign. Morgan had her lips in a tight line as her eyes moved. Her pointer finger slowly moved before it pointed down the road. They set off again, now walking a different way.
[Name] let out a sigh.
"Have you been here before?" She asked.
"Where?" Morgan replied confused.
[Name] pointed to the floor below her, "Here, have you been here before?"
"Have I been on this road before? Ummm no, I don't think so!"
[Name] bit her lip and looked away from Morgan awkwardly. Her hand tightened around the flashlight as she thought of what to say.
"Where places have you been?" She quietly said, trying to make a conversation.
"I've been to loads of places!", she spread her arms out. "I've been to Disneyland... a lot!" She giggled with a big grin.
[Name] nodded her head even though she had no idea what the little girl was talking about.
"Wow..." She trailed off, trying to sound enthusiastic but failed.
"Yeah... I love Disneyland! I wish I was there right now... with my mommy and daddy." Morgan mumbled.
[Name] heart sped up as she realised that the conversation was beginning to turn sad. She searched her brain for what to say.
"When I get you back home, you'll be able to."
Morgan still looked a little bit sad but a small smile found itself on her face.
"Yeah..." She sighed, "How long do you think it will take for me to get back home?"
[Name] stayed quiet for a moment before responding, "If we don't run into any trouble, we'll get there in about a couple of days." She answered as she shrugged her shoulders.
Morgan nodded her head and reached her hand out. She wiggled her fingers as she waited for [name] to pass the flashlight to her. She took the flashlight and gripped it, the handle was warm and began to unfreeze her cold fingers. She shook the flashlight around jokingly, making the light point in different directions randomly.
A cold hand grabbed her wrist making her stop. She looked up and looked into [name]'s eyes. [Name] looked back in front of them, avoiding eye contact, and grumbled out "Point it in front of us... we won't be able to see if you're flinging it around like that."
Morgan nodded her head in response.
"Come on, let's get going."
Morgan shone the light down the road as they walked. Their legs didn't feel so sore after they had had a short break whilst they read the sign.
They had only walked a few steps before Morgan suddenly pointed it to the side, trying to see what was off to the side of them. Once again, [name] gripped her wrist to steer her hand to face the flashlight back in front of them. Morgan peered at [name] through the corner of her eye. She began to slowly point the flashlight to the side again, trying to be sneaky. [Name] slowly turned her head towards Morgan as if warning her not to do it. But she ignored her and continued to slowly turn the flashlight.
"Give it to me!" [Name]'s voice suddenly demanded.
"No..." Morgan whined, "I have it!"
"Give it!"
"No!"
"Give it to me now!"
"Nooooo!"
"If you point it off to the side one more time I'm gonna take it from you." [Name] stared at her, annoyed. "That's a warning."
When [name] turned away, Morgan sneakily stuck her tongue out at her. They continued walking on in silence, tension was between them.
Morgan side-eyed her, a pout on her lips. Again, she started to slowly point the flashlight to the side and stared up at [name]'s face as she watched for a reaction. She puffed out a breath of air in annoyance when she didn't get what she wanted. But she suddenly gasped when the flashlight was snatched from her hand.
"Hey! Give it back!" She shouted out as she jumped up and down, trying to reach for it.
"I warned you."
Morgan mocked her in a low-pitched voice before continuing with, "It was my turn with the flashlight! My parents say that you have to 'wait your turn' and you didn't wait!" Morgan scowled. "You snatched and... Snatching. Is. Rude!"
[Name] stared down at her in annoyance and made her lips into a thin line.
"You're not getting the flashlight back."
Morgan stopped walking, stomped her foot, snapped her head up at the sky, and groaned loudly in anger.
[Name] stopped for a moment to stare at her little tantrum, sighed, and started walking again. Morgan looked towards [name] to see if she was looking at her. But when she realised she wasn't she pouted again. She jogged back to [name] and sluggishly walked next to her with her back hunched; she was trying to make [name] feel guilty but it didn't work.
Morgan looked around them before looking at [name]'s back.
"I want the flash-"
"Shush." [Name] interrupted Morgan.
She rolled her eyes and gave up on her attempt to get the flashlight back.
