Byler's confession

Mike: Will...

(Will turns to look at him)

I just need to talk to you for a moment.
Is that okay?

(Will nodded, slightly scared)

(They both walk away from the rest of the group, into the kitchen)

(Mike shuts the door)

Will: Are you alright? Is there any issue or...

(Mike sighs)

Will: What?

Mike: It's... it's about the painting... you gave me.

Will (weakly): okay...

...

Mike: Friends don't lie.

Will: What?

Mike: Friends... don't lie.

Will: I wouldn't... I would never lie to you Mike.

Mike: Then why did you?

Will: When was this? What are you talking about?

Mike: Will. Please stop pretending.

Will: pretending about what?

(Mike's soft face slowly dropped - he thought that the painting was Will's love confession to him but maybe he had built it up to much in his head. What of this was a friendship thing?)

Mike: wait- wha-? You... you really don't know?

Will: Can't you just tell me what's wrong?

(Silence)

Mike: It... (tearing up) it doesn't matter.

Will: Mike (touches him arm)... clearly it does. Please tell me. I'm- we're best friends.

(Mike takes a deep breath and blinks a few times, trying to makes the tears forming in his eyes disappear)

Mike: okay, well...

...

I thought that painting... was for me...

Will: it was... i- I don't understand what you mean.

Mike (emotional): I thought it was you telling me that (breathless)... that you love me... with this painting... and with everything you said when we were in that van.

(Will slowly takes his hand off of Mike, heart pounding out of his chest)

Will: I...

(makes eye contact with Mike)

...

(Looks away)

Mike: Will, please (grabs his hands)

(Will looked at their hands together as his eyes started to water)

Are you in love with me?

...

(Will stays silent)

...

Will...

Look at me please...

...

(Will gained the courage to look at Mike)

...

Are you in love with me Will?

...

(Will nervously gulped)

...

Will (quietly): yes, I am...

(Mike instantly hugged Will tightly with relief that all the signs weren't wrong and his feelings were reciprocated)

Mike (crying): I'm in love with you too Will

(Will felt like he was on cloud nine - all these years of hiding these feelings deep down were finally worth it)

(Will eventually hugged Mike back, gripping the sides of his shirt as if he could lose him at any moment again)
