She was alone in the house, waiting for her husband to come back from work. She heard the phone ring and picked it up.
"Hello?" she said.
"Hi, honey, it's me. I'm sorry I'm late, but there's been an accident on the highway. I'll be home as soon as I can."
She felt a surge of relief. "Oh, thank God, you're okay. I was so worried about you. How bad is the accident?"
"It's pretty bad. There are a lot of cars involved, and some of them are on fire. The police and the ambulance are here, but they're having trouble getting through the traffic."
She gasped. "That's horrible. Are you sure you're not hurt?"
"I'm fine, don't worry. I'm just stuck in the car, waiting for them to clear the way. Listen, I don't have much battery left on my phone, so I'll call you again when I get out of here, okay?"
"Okay, please be careful. I love you."
"I love you too. Bye."
She hung up the phone and sighed. She hoped he would be home soon. She turned on the TV and watched the news. There was a breaking report about a massive pile-up on the highway. She recognized the location as the one where her husband was.
She watched in horror as the reporter said that there were no survivors.
