ANAELYS WAS BORN GUILTY. Perhaps it was not her who gutted the Queen, restrained to her pearly white bedsheets as she screamed in fear, but it sometimes felt as though she had. For the first parts of her life she had always been regarded as the culprit in the Queen's murder. Isolated, ignored and neglected by those who were supposed to love and cherish her like no other.

The moment her father had wed Alicent Hightower, the girl just barely four-and-ten, Anaelys had gained that love she lacked. Their bond had begun at the ceremony, where the new Queen had held the little Princess to her chest, bouncing her and helping Anaelys to drink from a little goblet. In the years after, it was Alicent who would cradle her through night terrors and let the girl sit in her lap to eat. She would wipe Anaelys' tears with gentle fingers and plait her hair nicely. The Queen had taken the roles that her mother, father and elder sister should have accepted, yet one was dead and the other acted as though Anaelys was as well.

In the years since, they had taken strides to make up for the time they lost through pride and unjust anger to the little girl. For her fifth birthday, Rhaenyra took her to dragon back. She said it was to show her exactly what it would be like once her hatchling grew into a true dragon. Despite Rhaenyra being with child, and increasingly obviously so, she spent hours atop Syrax with Anaelys, laughing with her and showing her the skies. And that night, the Princess dined with her whole family in one room. It felt nice. It felt normal, even despite Alicent scowling to her eldest stepdaughter the whole evening.
