Filling up my boss' mug with my tea I wonder if he was trying to be condescending or kind. When my phone rings and my best friend interrupts my thoughts, I pick it up and answer her call.
"Hey Cart, just wondering if you were coming to the club tonight, we're opening up again soon and throwing a reopening party with all the renovations and new hires. I know you said you wanted to see the new stages before the first night." Straight to the point as always with Pam.
"Hey I'm doing so great thanks for asking best friend in the whole world." I love her so much but when she's thinking about her business she's so blunt it's scary.
"Sorry Cart, I've had a lot on my mind with the reopening." She sounds so stressed, I almost feel bad for being snarky...Almost.
"No biggie, yeah I'll drop in tonight! I wanted to see you anyway, you've been so busy with your super popular and amazing club." I can hear her chuckle through the phone and then someone in the back call out to her.
"Okay, got to go! Last finishing touches for the opening just arrived" before I could say bye pam hung up the phone. I shove my phone back into my pocket and finish stirring my tea so I can head back to my desk.
Thinking about going back to the club makes my heart flutter a bit, I truly love dance in all its forms and since the club was closed for renovations I haven't been able to dance in months.
"That's a big sigh wifey." I turn with a big smile to see Odette.
"Just thinking of all the ways I could get you to leave your lovely husband for me." She laughs and grabs a donut from the box.
"Work wife not enough for you anymore Cart?" Odette and I have been friends for years. We both started working here around the same time and I got to watch her fall in love with her now husband, he is the sweetest man I've ever met and I don't think he has a bone in his body capable of hurting Odette.
"Woe is me, my wife must be getting bored of me!" She shoves me out of my fake fainting spell and immediately the mood of the room changes. I open my eyes and see my boss stood in the doorway. He's 6'3 and muscular so when he stands in a doorway he blocks the whole thing, easily making me and Odette feel trapped in the break room. He must have noticed the panic rising in Odette because he quickly changed his stance so he was not blocking her way. She used that as a means to leave and shyly said goodbye as she left. It's not that she's actually scared of him or that she dislikes him, Mr.Stanley just has a intimidating aura and it scares most people away, including me but I just refuse to show that.
"Impressive show Ms. Callahan, but please, keep your acting talents in a locked briefcase far away from this office." He had a slight sarcastic tone that told me as serious as he was he was also trying to play with me.
"What! My talents do not deserve this treatment, I am a star." I said crossing my arms with his mug in one hand, his eyes locked on it and I became overly conscious of the porcelain in my hand.
"I'm glad you took my offer of a mug. Make sure you wash it well before you give it back." He turned and walked straight out without looking back. I looked at his back confused as he walked away, I thought he was playing around but maybe I read it wrong and he just wanted me to get back to work after all.
I pull myself together after overthinking everything and finish off the tea I had poured a minute ago in a few gulps.
"Wash it well blah blah blah." I mutter to myself knowing if anyone heard me there would be consequences but right now I was just pissy and wanted to mock him. I washed his mug twice just to make sure he couldn't say anything later about the cleanliness of his precious mug. If he was going to be rude about it why offer it to me in the first place?
I only had a few hours left of work so I headed back to my desk and started working on the projects that didn't really have a due date, I was up to date on everything else so it was the only thing I had to keep my mind off of what Mr.Stanley said earlier. As if I was dirty and his cup would catch it from me. He has my cup but he didn't hear me say anything about it. Whatever, I never had hope he would be nice to me for making anyway.
