CHAPTER 3: Alike
- LIA -
Fast-moving cars on the road greeted me after minutes of running. I didn't even need a mirror to know that I looked like trash. I could feel the eyes of the people passing by me; maybe they found it weird that I was soaked in sweat and my clothes were full of dirt, or they were worried because it looked like something bad had happened to me, which was the case.
I waved my hand to flag down a taxi. After I entered the car, I told the driver to take me to my hotel. The driver looked at me as if he wanted to ask a question. However, after moments of staring at me, he decided to remain silent and started driving.
I hoped that this time, it was a legitimate taxi.
My feet felt numb, maybe because I had just run for a couple of minutes, thinking that someone was chasing me. My knee, which had hurt a lot earlier, felt fine. I had thought my knee joints had dislocated when I jumped earlier.
I couldn't believe I was still alive after jumping from such a great height. It was an additional experience for me.
I chuckled
at that thought. I couldn't believe I had forced myself to do that. I couldn't even jump from the top of five stairs to the bottom, yet I had jumped from what I thought was the 2nd floor of that house. The driver looked at me through the rearview mirror with a confused expression. It seemed like he thought I was insane because I was laughing alone, even when there was nothing funny happening.
I coughed a little to ease the awkwardness inside the taxi and focused my eyes on the road. Thankfully, the driver was taking the usual route to my hotel. I let out a sigh of relief when I finally saw the hotel where I was staying.
The driver stopped the taxi. He looked back at me and said, "13 euros, doña."
I patted the side of my pants, searching for my purse. I was stunned when I didn't feel anything. My wallet was missing!
The driver coughed a bit. I looked back at him and gave him an awkward smile. I signaled for him to wait.
Damn it! That man must have stolen my wallet!
I also realized that the things I had bought earlier were also missing. Even my sling bag, which had my umbrella and handkerchief, was gone!
Fortunately, I always kept spare money hidden in my scrunchie.
"Do you have scissors?" I asked the driver as I removed my scrunchie from my hair.
The driver looked at me, confused. He didn't understand what I said, but I didn't know how to say that question in Spanish!
Instead of answering verbally, I made a scissor motion with my fingers, mimicking how scissors work.
"Aah," the driver nodded, indicating that he understood what I meant. "Si," he replied.
He opened a small compartment beside him and handed me the scissors I needed. I cut a small hole in my scrunchie to hide my money, or maybe I could just stitch it up.
After getting
the money and paying him, I left the taxi and hurriedly ran towards the hotel. I entered the elevator and selected my floor.I sighed heavily. I couldn't believe what had happened today. There was this guy who claimed I was his ex-girlfriend, and there was this lady who looked exactly like me!
I closed my eyes and took several deep breaths. In the back of my mind, something was telling me I needed to go to the hospital and have myself checked by doctors. However, another part of me was saying I was okay because I couldn't feel anything wrong with my body. I chose to believe the latter.
