Sixteen, Thought She Knew It All
Belly's birthday was always one of Caroline's favorite days of summer. The younger girl always made her feel included, even though it was supposed to be her day. Caroline spent the weeks apart from her friend planning on what gift to get her but always ended up getting it at the last minute. Though she knew she had to go all out for Belly's sweet sixteen since it was such a momentous occasion.
She got up extra early on the day of Belly's birthday to be at the Fishers before the birthday girl awoke. The girl rushed to put on a cute enough outfit before knocking on her brother's door to wake him up. To her surprise, he was already dressed and ready to go. "Of course, the one day you get up early is Belly's birthday."
"Oh shut up," Finn said as a blush crept onto his cheeks, "I just happened to be up already. You know, it was very bright this morning."
It was cute seeing her little brother get so worked up over Belly in Caroline's opinion. She had always hoped Belly would see the crush Finn harbored for her, but her sights were always set on Conrad. One thing the two friends never discussed was their feelings for the eldest Fisher brother. They were both aware of the other's feelings, but it was never actually spoken about.
"So, what did you get Bells for her birthday?"
Finn rummaged around his desk before picking up a pale blue bag with tissue paper sticking out at the top, "Just some stupid stuff. You'll find out when she opens it anyway."
"You're no fun," Caroline said with a pout as the two left Finn's room to head over to the Fishers.
Upon arriving at the Fishers, the siblings were rushed into helping prepare the final touches for Belly's birthday. Caroline was tasked with adding more decorations, and Finn chose to hang by Steven and Jeremiah. Conrad sat at the kitchen island, opting to eat a bowl of cereal rather than help the group.
"Morning everyone." Belly's voice rang out as she walked into the kitchen, surveying the scene.
A chorus of happy birthdays rang out as everyone waited their turn to hug the birthday girl. "Happy birthday Bells, god you're so old now." Caroline joked as she hugged her best friend.
"Your Mickey Mouse pancakes are ready."
Belly hesitated for a bit before responding to her mother, "Actually, I'm not really, uh, hungry."
Susannah, ever the saving grace of the group, spoke up to replace the tension that was forming in the room, "Shall we open gifts?" Causing both Jeremiah and Finn to practically leap from their seats in excitement, arguing over who got Belly the best gift. Conrad opted to stay silent, earning quizzical looks from both Caroline and Belly.
Once all three families were situated in the living room, Laurel chose to give her gift first. Belly unwrapped the small gift and opened an old-looking book, which Laurel was quick to give context to.
