Chapter 5
Another day like all the others
I woke up troubled from a scary dream, which I can't remember regardless how hard I try. I took a glance at my nightstand's clock. 06:25. In the morning? I should sleep again.
But I can't....
The only think I achieved was spending 10 more minutes in bed twisting like a whirligig. Caesar had slept in front of my bed last night and that's why when I got up I stepped on him. He whined a little but didn't move from his place. Dosser!
"Melia! What are you doing up this early?" my mother asked when she saw me on my way to the kitchen to grab some water.
"I couldn't sleep more".
She came closer touching my forehead with her palm and then with her lips.
"You don't have fever" she murmured.
"I'm fine. Just not sleepy".
"Come I'll make you a herbal tea to calm your nerves".
"Ok".
I drank the tea my mother made for me but she wouldn't go away unless she was sure I was going to return in bed.
The minute I heard the door closing I got up again. Herbal tea didn't help. I was feeling anxious and full of energy so I started to do some chores around the house, even unpacking the last things. At some time Caesar decided it was time to wake up and play. When I couldn't stand his nagging anymore I gave up and made some breakfast for both of us.
I couldn't stay in one place even for a few minutes to eat.
"Caesar, we are leaving" I announced to him.
I changed quickly to whatever I saw in front of me, and after grabbing Caesar's leash we got out for a walk.
It was noon already and the sun was up for a second day in the row. The streets were full of people. This time we walked further than usual thanks to the extra energy I couldn't get rid of, since the morning. We reached a shopping street.
I was window shopping and eyeing a long black dress when some shouts caught my attention. A group of 7-8 girls and boys around my age were coming towards me laughing and teasing each other.
I watched their reflections through the window as they run across the street to buy giant colorful cones of ice creams from a street seller.
A wave of jealousy enveloped me. I was supposed to be like them right now. Laying on a greek island's hot sand, enjoying a strawberry cocktail and watching sunburned boys playing sports on the beach. Instead I am stuck in London waiting to hear about the therapy I was going to follow. Certainly my future includes some delicious pill cocktails and long laying hours on comfy hospital beds. The best thing I can hope now is a good looking doctor around at least.
Life is so unfair. All my friends are on vacation and probably having a great time like these kids over there. My extra energy left me at last and the tension I had evaporated. I can't just wait with my arms folded. I won't let some cells define my life, neither will I sit all day in my house pitying myself. I have to make a plan.

After a brief internet search I found some swimming centers nearby. I decided to join the one I saw when we were driving to the hospital the other day. I was going to do that today.

I had not realized how much I missed the pool until I went inside one to register.
The smell from the chlorine in the water and plastic of all these goggles and flippers, the unbearable heated and wet but energizing atmosphere enveloped me from the second I stepped inside. I thought about the water's feeling and the muscles when they start to work painfully slow the first times and thought about all these stuff that were the things I had missed the most.
Unfortunately there was no time because I had to return home to get ready for the doctor's appointment this afternoon. I signed but I had to wait one more day to get in the water.
I had to be home before my mother. I hardly made it. I had just opened the tv when I heard the key at the door and my mother's voice telling me it was time to go. If she knew what I was doing she surely would kill me!
