"Good afternoon, Miss Rolly!" I greeted the front desk staff with a smile as I walked confidently towards the elevator.
Passing by busy staff members hustling to meet deadlines, one of them remarked, "Good afternoon, Miss Rolly! Last day at work."
"Yes, finally some rest at home," I replied, and we both chuckled.
"Well, Ma'am, don't you also bring your work home?" Lydia, a Finance department staff member, joined in the laughter. We had worked together in a team-building event last year.
"I'll head off now, Lydia," I said, and she nodded, cracking another joke before the elevator doors closed.
The elevator, previously quiet, became noisier with each floor we stopped at. I was joined by several managers and supervisors in the back. I was heading to the fifteenth floor, and it would take a while.
It was Friday, and it was the last day for extended tasks, so I understood why some staff members were rushing. It was one o'clock in the afternoon, and some had just returned from their lunch break, while I was on my way to my department, feeling hungry.
I wanted to submit the report before taking my lunch. Every Friday, I visited the laboratory to conduct research on some improved medicines. Before it was completed, we needed to market it to several well-known hospitals and pharmacies.
NeuroMorph had evolved and gained recognition not only in the Philippines but also internationally. The company was expanding with branches in London and the United States, adding three more floors. For some inexplicable reason, the marketing team's office was at the far end, closest to the CEO's office.
I was assigned to supervise the Marketing department. Initially, I was just the team head, but after a year of hard work, I earned the position. There was supposed to be someone else taking over the soon-to-be vacant supervisor position, but they resigned before that could happen.
No one wanted to accept the position because they said it was a tough job. However, I wanted to challenge myself, so I took it. I attended numerous meetings to catch up with the responsibilities of the role. So far, it was stressful but enjoyable at the same time.
"Good afternoon, Miss Rolly," someone greeted me as they noticed my presence.
Some people higher than me just smiled and continued chatting. I messaged Tarian about his lunch.
"They're here, Miss Shaine, right?"
"Miss Shaine? Who? The chemist who studied abroad?"
"Yes, the one Sir Troi sponsored, the one he saw potential in. She used to be timid and quiet, but now she's completely different. Gorgeous and sexy!"
I glanced briefly at the chatting Visor group. They had iced coffee and were talking.
"She arrived yesterday and went straight to the lab to discuss a new chemical procedure. It seems she plans to visit Sir Troi today; that's why he hasn't left his office since earlier," said one manager.
My phone vibrated, distracting me from the gossip. It was a message from Tarian. I opened it, but my attention was still on the ongoing chatter.
"They even ordered lunch earlier and treated everyone upstairs. Miss Shaine had the most beautiful smile," someone mentioned.
I kept licking my lips as my phone flashed another message. This time, I focused on it.
Tarian:
Grandma cooked beef steak for me, Mommy. How about you, Mommy? Have you eaten lunch yet?
