In the quietest corner of the Gusu Lan Library
Lan Xichen sat hunched over a pile of dusty scrolls and ancient texts. The soft glow of lanterns illuminated his serious face as he meticulously examined the documents, searching for clues about his parents' tragic death. He had been at it for hours, determined to uncover any information that might shed light on the mystery that had haunted their family for years.
Just as he was about to give up for the night, he stumbled upon a particularly old and worn scroll. With trembling hands, he unrolled it and began reading. His eyes widened as he realized the significance of the information it contained.
Lan Xichen couldn't contain his excitement and concern. He needed to share this discovery with his brother, Lan Wangji, immediately. He gathered the scrolls, carefully placed them back in their proper order, and hurriedly made his way to Wangji's quarters.
As he approached, he knocked gently on the door, calling out,
"Wangji, it's me, Xichen."
Wangji, who had been quietly meditating, opened the door and was surprised to see his older brother at this late hour.
"Xiongzhang, what brings you here at this hour?"
Lan Xichen entered and closed the door behind him
"Wangji, I've found something in the library, something related to our parents' death."
Wangji's eyes widened with interest and concern.
"What is it, Xiongzhang? Please, tell me."
Xichen took a deep breath and began explaining the contents of the scroll and what he had pieced together.
"This scroll contains information about an incident that occurred around the time of our parents' death. It suggests that there may have been foul play involved, and that they may not have died in the way we were told."
The elder brother, Xichen, broke the silence, his voice heavy with the weight of their shared sorrow.
Xichen: (softly) "Wangji, it has been so long since we lost our parents, but the pain never truly fades, does it?"
Wangji nodded, his eyes fixed on the distant horizon.
Wangji: "No, Brother. It does not."
Xichen: "I've been thinking... about that day, the day they died."
Wangji turned his head to look at Xichen, concern in his eyes.
Wangji: "What do you mean, Brother?"
Xichen: (hesitating) "When I was in seclusion, I saw them. Mother and Father. They were trying to tell me something, but I couldn't understand. It was like they were speaking in riddles."
Wangji furrowed his brow, deep in thought.
Wangji: "That is strange. What do you think they were trying to tell you?"
Xichen: (whispering) "I don't know, Wangji. But I have a feeling that Uncle Lan Qiren is hiding something from us."
Wangji: (surprised) "Uncle Lan Qiren? But why would he keep such a secret?"
Xichen: "I do not know, but I intend to find out. I believe we owe it to our parents to uncover the truth."
Just as they were about to delve further into their suspicions, a familiar voice interrupted their conversation.
Wei Ying: (excitedly) "Lan Zhan!"
Startled, both Wangji and Xichen turned to see Wei Ying approaching, a wide smile on his face.
"Lan Zhan, you won't believe what I found today," he exclaimed, excitement evident in his voice.
Wangji's eyes softened as he gazed at Wei Ying. "Wei Ying."
However, as Wei Ying noticed Xichen sitting beside Wangji, his excitement turned into shyness. He greeted Xichen with a respectful nod and a polite,
"Lan Xichen gege."
Xichen smiled warmly and nodded in return. Wangji could see the curiosity in Wei Ying's eyes, and he knew he would be questioned soon.
"I'll leave you two to your conversation," he said.
As they continued their conversation, Wangji couldn't help but wonder about the secrets that lay hidden within the Lan Clan and the mysteries surrounding their parents' passing. He knew that he and Xichen would have to embark on a journey of discovery, one that might bring them answers they were not prepared for. But they were determined to uncover the truth, no matter where it might lead them.
As the brothers began to strategize and discuss their plan to uncover the truth behind their parents' tragic death, a newfound sense of purpose and unity filled the room. They knew that this journey would not be easy, but they were willing to face any challenge to bring closure to their family's painful past.
Once Xichen had left the jingshi, Wei Ying couldn't contain his curiosity any longer.
Wei Ying: "What happened, Lan Zhan? Why did your brother look so serious?"
Wangji sighed, torn between his desire to confide in Wei Ying and his fear of causing him pain.
Wangji: "It is a family matter, Wei Ying. I cannot discuss it."
Wei Ying's expression fell, and he nodded understandingly.
Wei Ying: "I see. If you ever need to talk, remember that I am here for you."
Wangji appreciated Wei Ying's support but couldn't bring himself to reveal the painful truth about their parents' deaths. Instead, he smiled faintly and nodded in gratitude.
Wangji: "Thank you, Wei Ying."
Wangji hesitated for a moment, reluctant to burden Wei Ying with the weight of their family's tragedy.
But Wei Ying, ever persistent, saw the concern in Wangji's eyes and said,
"Lan Zhan, you can tell me anything. We're going to be married soon. You don't have to keep secrets from me."
Wangji sighed, his heart heavy. "Very well, Wei Ying." He proceeded to share the painful story of how his parents had died under mysterious circumstances, how Xichen had been in seclusion all this time, and how he had come to convince Wangji to marry Wen Qingh because there was a connection between the Wen Clan and his parents' death.
Wei Ying listened intently, his eyes brimming with tears as he absorbed the tragic tale. He reached out and took Wangji's hand, squeezing it gently.
"Lan Zhan, I'm so sorry you had to go through all of this alone."
Unable to hold back his emotions any longer, Wei Ying started to cry softly. Wangji pulled him into a comforting embrace, holding him close and letting him grieve. They sat together on the bed of jingshi, their love and shared pain binding them even more tightly as they faced the mysteries and challenges of their past and future together.
