Fractured Fairytale

With lips as red as a thorned rose, hair as dark as burning ebony, and skin as white as newly fallen snow. With her eyes as dark as the starless night sky, and her hands as soft as wool. Snow White is easily the fairest of them all.

Snow White with a smile so kind that can almost be disturbing. She had fangs as white as a white rose, and sharp as a rose thorn. Her nails were sharp as a knight's blade, and as red as blood on snow.

Her charisma was unmatched. A person who was paid all the jewels in the land could not go against her eyes as they became rubies of control. Her eyes can make even the hungriest of bears fall beneath her feet and do as she pleases.

"Queen Grimhilde," peasants ask, "Why have you not shown us this evil heart on stake?"

"Queen Grimhilde," they call, "Is it safe to leave our homes?"

"Queen Grimhilde," they beg, "Is this evil defeated?"

I called all the knights in the land to bring me her heart on a stake. To be sure she is disposed of properly, and is truly assassinated. The knights came and left. When they had returned, their eyes had become the same ruby as Snow White's. In their hypnotized state, they are unable to do much other than be pulled to a room where they can uncharmed from Snow White's spell.

All of my knights have failed.

I am the only one who is capable of killing her at this time.

I leave the castle in the dead of night, my cloak hiding my identity from the world. My boots crunch in the freshly fallen snow, my prints being hidden as more snow falls behind me. My breath is frozen white with each exhale, each inhale like a frozen knife being stabbed into my lungs.

I trudge into the forest, my lantern casting a warm yellow glow in the air. Snowflakes flutter to the ground, adding to the few inches of snow already blocking my path. The air smells of pine, like a fall evening filled or candles waxed with needles from spruce trees. Like a cool fall evening. The pine reminds me of many warm memories, not suitable for this cold winter night.

The sun was slowly rising over the horizon, and poppy red cardinals arose from their nests with songs of a new day. The rising sun gave a golden glow over the snowy forest, marking the beginning of a new day.

And the last day of Snow White.

Smoke arose from the distance, a dark gray column rose high into the sky. Mixing with the white clouds above. Cardinals and a few deer were crowded around a small cottage.

The cottage looked older, maybe 20 years old from this far. The roof was tightly woven hay columns, meant to keep its inhabitants warm. However, it was dusted in a light layer of white powder. The walls were white clay, mostly held together by fir frames. The two visible windows had window boxes with dying black roses, beautiful and eerie from afar.

I could hear a quiet song being sung, a young girl's voice I assume. It sounded eerie and threatening, like the howl of a wolf to its prey. I checked my belt for my wooden stake, feeling for the splintered edge of the handle.

I stalked forward, following the sound of this girl's voice, echoing off the tall trunks of fir and evergreen trees. Her voice was almost wynorrific, beautiful but terrifying.

In the distance was a young woman, with a cloak the same color of blood but rimmed with the color of freshly fallen snow. The hood was over her head, but with each twirl, a lock of ebony color hair would fall out. Her dress was the color of a yellow parasol mushroom, with a corset the color of a frozen lake.

I had found Snow White.

A wave of fear washes over me like an ocean drowning me. I took a shaky breath, watching as it turned the same color as the snow. I slowly took the stake out of my belt. The sharp end pointed toward the evil that twirled like a young girl in front of me.

I took a deep breath, letting my hood fall off of my head. I raised the stake over my shoulder. Using as much force as I could. I launched the stake forward. Letting the wood whistle through the air.

It hit my mark. In the heart of the evil of Snow White.

I had won.

I relieved my kingdom of the most notorious vampire.

Snow White.
