I jolted awake, my heart racing, my body soaked in sweat. It was that nightmare again, the one that haunted my dreams like a relentless specter. The memory of that night was etched into my mind, an indelible scar on my soul.
The room was shrouded in darkness, and the silence was suffocating. For a moment, I struggled to catch my breath, the terror of the dream still clinging to me like a second skin. Moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting eerie shadows on the unfamiliar walls of my dorm room.
Serenovia University, my new beginning, had brought me here, to this room that held no memories, no echoes of the past. It was a fresh start, a chance to escape the isolation that had defined my life for so long. But the past had a way of resurfacing, of clawing its way back into my consciousness.
I peeled the damp sheets away, feeling the cool air on my clammy skin. My trembling fingers fumbled for the switch, flooding the room with artificial light. The harsh fluorescence did little to banish the lingering fear that clung to me.
My gaze fell upon the small desk in the corner, adorned with an array of notebooks and textbooks. It was my lifeline, my way of communicating with the world. My voice had been stolen from me, silenced forever by the trauma of that night.
With a heavy sigh, I pushed the covers aside and swung my legs over the edge of the bed. The room was sparsely decorated, devoid of personal touches. It was a temporary space, a stopgap until I could truly leave my past behind.
As I rose from the bed, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. The reflection that stared back at me was a stranger, a woman who had lost her innocence long before her time. My hazel eyes, once bright with curiosity, now held a haunted look, a silent plea for understanding.
The day awaited, a blank canvas upon which I could paint my new life. It was a chance to reinvent myself, to find my voice once more, even if it was through written words. I couldn't let the past define me any longer.
The thought of facing the day alone was daunting, but I wasn't truly alone. Riley, my roommate, had welcomed me into her life with open arms. She was a beacon of warmth in this unfamiliar world, a friend who had the power to dispel the shadows that clung to me.
I grabbed a fresh change of clothes and headed toward the shared bathroom, the cold linoleum floor sending a shiver up my spine. The water from the shower, hot and soothing, washed away the remnants of the nightmare, if only for a brief moment.
As I stepped out of the bathroom, I found Riley sitting on her bed, engrossed in a book. She looked up and offered a warm smile, a silent understanding passing between us. In her presence, I found solace, a glimmer of hope that the darkness could be pushed back, one day at a time.
Together, we prepared for the day ahead, a journey into the unknown, where I would slowly find my voice again, and where the past would no longer define me. Serenovia held the promise of new beginnings, and I was determined to embrace them, one whispered word at a time.

As we walked down the hallways of Serenovia University, Riley continued her animated chatter about the school and the town. "Serenovia has such a rich history," she said, her voice carrying the excitement of discovery. "And the campus is just breathtaking, especially during sunset. You'll love it here, Evelyn."
I nodded and smiled, grateful for Riley's companionship. It was her voice that brought life to our conversation, a bridge between my silent world and the vibrant one she painted with words.
"Have you explored the town yet?" Riley asked.
I shook my head, indicating that I hadn't ventured beyond the campus. Serenovia was still a mystery to me, a place waiting to be explored.
"You should definitely check out the local cafes," she suggested. "The one on Elm Street makes the best cinnamon pastries. And there's a beautiful park by the river where you can relax and read."
I made a mental note to visit those places, thankful for Riley's guidance. Our journey continued through the bustling hallways, filled with students eager to start their day.
But as we entered the classroom, the mood shifted. Whispers and hushed conversations filled the air as students found their seats. I noticed a figure in the far back of the room, an imposing presence that seemed to radiate hostility.
Athena, that was her name. She was the one who had been glaring at me since we entered the room, her gaze icy and unwavering. I had never seen her before, but her demeanor sent a shiver down my spine.
Riley noticed my discomfort and leaned in, whispering on my notepad. "Don't worry about her, Evelyn. Some people here can be a bit standoffish, but most are friendly. Just focus on the class."
I nodded, trying to push Athena's glare to the back of my mind and focus on the instructions the teacher is giving. Ultimately I end up giving up and lay my head down to rest, closing my eyes and slowly drifting off to sleep.
