Chapter Three

Walking to the public bus stop, my shoe scrapes against something metal.
When I go to pick it up, I realize what it is. A Dauntless pin. Must be something from a factionless.
I shove it in my bookbag and keep jogging down the sidewalk.

A few minutes after I arrive at school, the teens file into the cafeteria in two long lines. When I find an open spot, I sit across from Alex, but he sees a blonde girl with no seat.
"Here," he says, gesturing toward the bench.
"Thank you," and she shakes his hand and they exchange names.
"Beatrice," she says a few seconds before they call her for her Aptitude test.
Alex sits back in his original seat.
"Are you nervous, Jacqueline?" He asks, tapping his fingers quietly on the table.
"A bit." I say, keeping in lies. "You?"
"No, not really. I already think I know what result I'll get." Alex smiles as they call him in for his Aptitude test.
And then I sit alone.
