⋄∘∙♱⋄∘∙AS I APPROACHED THE IMPOSING DOOR OF THR COUNCIL'S UNDERGROUND BUNKER, my heart raced with a mixture of anxiety, and determination. I knew Damon was close by, and that he wouldn't let me get hurt, yet I couldn't help but feel a little scared to be on my own. A light haired woman with almond eyes stood guarding the entrance. A stern-faced woman eyed me with suspicion as I drew closer. "State your name and your business," she demanded, her tone cold and authoritative.
I met her gaze without flinching. "I'm Lana Rhoads," I replied evenly, my voice steady. "I'm here to... discuss a matter with the council."
The council member's eyes narrowed as she scrutinized me. "Rhoads, you say? I don't recall any Rhoads by that name being on the council."
I felt a bead of sweat form on my brow, but I couldn't back down now. "I'm not on the council," I explained, choosing my words carefully. "But my family has a long history with this town. I believe I can offer valuable insight as well."
The woman hesitated, her suspicion warring with curiosity. Finally, she stepped aside and motioned for me to enter. "Very well, Ms. Rhoads. Go ahead."
As I walked past her and into the dimly lit corridor, I couldn't help but feel a sense of triumph mingled with trepidation. I was in, and now it was my turn to open the door for Damon. I paced toward the back entrance where Damon waited for me with a cocky grin on his tan face. "Hey bunny," he greeted.
"I can't believe they actually let me in," I scoffed in disbelief. "I mean, they know who my brother is, right?" Damon shrugged his shoulders that were covered by a worn leather jacket.
"Maybe they don't. Maybe they know what they need to know. That he's a vampire." Damon flashed his fangs at me, a devilish grin on his face. "Now let's save him before they put a stake through his heart." With a silent nod, I led him through the labyrinthine corridors, avoiding the council members who patrolled the area. We moved with stealth and purpose, our every step taking us closer to the room where Louis was being held captive.
Damon and I burst through the door, our hearts pounding, to find Louis restrained with vervain ropes, his eyes filled with a mixture of pain and relief as he saw us. But what caught my attention was the man standing in front of him, poised to strike with a wooden stake. The man looked so familiar, and a rush of memories and emotions surged within me. His face was etched with the passage of time, but there was no mistaking those features.
"Wait!" I exclaimed, my voice filled with urgency. "Stop! Who are you?"
The man lowered the stake, his eyes narrowing as he studied me. "Lana? Is that really you?"
I stepped closer, my heart racing as recognition washed over me. "William, Dad's friend," I whispered, the pieces falling into place. "You're... a vampire."
