Jimmy was so happy. Today was a special day - the most special day of all of the days. Today was his birthday. Being the birthday boi meant he could do anything. Mostly, it meant he could have dessert and go to bed an hour late. To Jimmy, that was everything. Smelling breakfast, he rushed out of his bedroom and flew down the stairs.
- "Hey! Running in the stairs?"
Surprised by his father sneaking around the corner, Jimmy paused for a second.
- "Hi dad."
- "Happy birthday, kiddo."
After papa left the room, Jimmy quietly walked down the remaining steps, then headed towards the kitchen.
- "Oy h'oppy borthdey Jimmy boi!"
Aunt Mary was cooking something. It smelled delicious.
- "Thank you Auntie!"
- "Om cookin s...s...sum penkeykes woth yor feyvrite f...f................food!"
- "They look so yummy! Can I have one?"
- "N...N........Nnnn...........Okay." she said, before sighing in frustration.
Aunt Mary spoke funny. Jimmy was used to it - she had always been like that, ever since he'd known her. Leary'Ma said she started speaking funny after the stop this. Jimmy picked up a pancake. For his birthday, he decided he was finally brave enough to have his own adventure in the garden. He crossed the main corridor to the back of the house and opened the door to the garden.
- "Iiiif it iiiisn't myyy liiiitle Jimmyy boooiiiii. Cooome heeeere give graaandmaaa a kiiiss."
Jimmy jumped in surprise. How could he forget? Leary'Ma really liked to sit in the garden. He never understood why. The plants were dead, the ground was of a dirty yellow, and a wall of dying, crackly tall grass stood between the house and...well, Jimmy didn't know. He had never been to the other side of the garden. It had always kind of scared him. He once asked his Auntie if they could plant things together, to make it more appealing, but she just paused the dishes to stare at him. When Jimmy asked Leary'Ma, she said the garden used to I told you to stop.
- "Hi grandma!"
- "Whaaat is going ooon Jimmy boooii? I doooon't uuuusually see youuuu heeere. Youuu're grooowing uuup so faaaast."
Despite her tall figure and very wrinkled face - so much in fact that she looked more like a wax statue than a living thing - Leary'Ma had a soft, almost weak, but reassuring voice. There was a wisdom to her words. Jimmy felt like she understood him. Like she knew what he was feeling before he even spoke.
- "It's my birthday! I'm big now! I'm going on my first adventure!"
- "Ooooh Jimmy boi. Be caaareful in the graaaaass."
- "Don't worry Ma. I'll be brave!"
Despite the big words, Jimmy did not like the garden. The stiff, brown grass that grew there was mean, and who knew what kind of bugs hid inside.
However, birthdays were for action and discovery. If there were any day to be a brave adventurer, it would be today. Jimmy took a deep breath, readied himself, and walked into the grass.
Cautious at first, he quickly got the hang of it. Despite its menacing appearance, the grass was fairly easy to navigate, if you ignored the big juicy gross no no no stop no insects please. Focused on his goal, he kept walking forward. In a few seconds, he reached the other side of the garden.
Stumbling out of the grass, he looked around the area.
The first thing he saw was a barebone, grey metal table with a chair. Behind it, a half destroyed wooden shed, evidently worn by time. Jimmy walked inside the shed to look for treasure. Sadly, he didn't find anything. Only dust, and - he assumed - memories of happier times. Memories that evidently, he didn't have access to.
As he walked out of the shed, Jimmy saw an object he hadn't noticed on the far end of the garden. He squinted his eyes, and froze in terror. It couldn't be. No, it had to be his imagination. Something like this could not be in the family house. Jimmy's breathing intensified, every bone of his body telling him to run back to the house.
No. He knew what to do. He closed his eyes, as he had been taught. Slowly, he counted to 10, breathing slower and slower. His breathing stabilized, he kept his eyes shut and embraced the moment, grounding himself. He was here. It was ok. He could be brave. Jimmy opened his eyes, ready to take on the challenge before him. He walked towards the grey object.
Now that he was close, there were no doubts about it. It was indeed a gr no a gra nonono stop stop a grave NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
