— "Footsteps..."
Grax pointed nervously.
The kids stopped in their tracks.
Footsteps.
There were footsteps on the road leading to the village.
Their village.
There were footsteps.
They didn't know what to do.
— "Th—those weren't there when we left yesterday."
Vrox's breathing was heavy, his teeth clenched. It was hard to make out what he was saying. The pressure was getting to him.
Grax was crying. In her distress, Super came up to her for a hug.
Flox was silent, his face grave with worry. First, the empty Breyxerz houses. Then, those strange tracks leading up to their own village.
The empty houses.
The tracks...
— "What if..."
He paused.
He shouldn't say it.
They're gonna lose it if he says it.
But he had to indulge the thought.
The Breyxers village was empty because whoever lived there had been travelling to their own village.
They should leave.
They should...
— "Ok. Let's go."
Vrox had regained his spirit.
— "Wh—"
— "Let's go to the village. We have to know what's going on."
— "But Vrox..."
— "No buts. We don't even know if anything is happening at all. At least let's get a peek."
Flox didn't have the courage to stop them. Vrox was walking first, Grax next to him. She was still holding Super.
The air felt heavier and heavier as they approached the village. It wasn't long before they started hearing screams. Terrified, they had no choice but to follow Vrox. Eventually, they reached the front gate.
It was completely destroyed.
— "No!"
Vrox ran towards the door, Grax behind him. Flox followed them.
Through the door, what they saw was almost too hard for their minds to grasp.
The village was in flames. Goblins were crying, whimpering, screaming. Some were burnt to death. Some were disfigured and dismembered. Most of them still in the process of dying in agony. Houses were destroyed or in flames. From afar, loud, unidentified screeches were chipping away at their determination to enter the village.
Unfortunately, not enough to deter Vrox.
— "We need to find our parents."
Flox couldn't believe it.
— "Are you crazy?! We need to run away! This is not a game, we—"
— "Do what you want. We're going."
Not waiting for an answer, Vrox ran into the village, still holding Grax's hand.
This time, Flox did not follow them. He did not know what to do. He had seen enough. He did not want to see his family in pieces. But then, what if they were still alive? What if they were in danger, what if he could help them?
