NICK STARED AT THE DOOR, THE BRIGHT NEON sign hanging overhead, reading "CAFÉ 36" buzzing loudly as he stood there. he had avoided this side of the sidewalk with such stubborn determination for the last eleven months, twenty-three days, twenty three hours, and fifty minutes. no one could sway him. they tried, with as much as gusto and bribery they could possibly think of.

"you coming in?" alex hummed, stepping through the door to see his best friend, his face falling as he spotted nick, who usually housed unwavering confidence, a gentle smile, and loud sense of humour, staring at the ice covered ground, his bottom lip pulled between his teeth as he messed with the ends of his sleeves.

"i don't think i can, alex. i'm not ready yet." nick mumbled, tucking his face into the collar of his black fresh love hoodie that he wore beneath a dark jacket and taking off in the direction ahead of him. as he walked along the slick salt littered sidewalk, he felt an overwhelming sense of core-rotting deja-vu.

he was taken back to the night that xavier broke his heart. he couldn't do it. the light from the sign, the smell of the café's signature coffee blend wafting in the wind every time the door opened, the light doorbell. no matter how long it's been, those very significant things personal to that coffee shop, it takes him right back to the night his heart broke.

right where xavier left him.

it felt like his progress was constantly reset every time something so specific to café 36 was thrown back into his lap, and it killed him. it was one step forward and two steps back. he felt so distraught. he didn't know what to do with himself.

the sign haunted his heart, his dreams, and his every thought. he had always been so independent, outside of his brothers chris and matt. it was so difficult for him to open himself to another person, much less figuratively hand his heart to someone. for him to fall in love, a process where a person bares their entire soul and heart to another person, it was terrifying. it shook nick to his core.
