I paused at the last stair and listened closely. He's not there, right? I didn't hear anything, so I assumed he was at work. I pretty much took ten minutes to wander about the kitchen and living area. However, when I circled back into the kitchen and looked at his oven clock, I realised it had been a half hour. Come to think of it, I had been marvelling at his paintings, marble countertop, and elaborate fireplace for a while....
I thought I'd heard some strange noises while looking around, but I usually heard things, so I didn't think much of it. But, these noises became more frequent, and I stood still for a moment, to figure out where it was coming from. That door was....The garage? I think.
"Mew!" I gasped loudly. It must be one of his cats! In his letter, he'd said that he'd lock them away in case I was afraid, but I wasn't! Although, maybe he just didn't want them in the house. I opened the door slightly and edged out into the garage. It was absolutely freezing out there, compared with the heated interior of the house. My fingers automatically slipped between the door and the doorframe, to keep the door quiet as I closed it. A little furball brushed past my leg and made that same little noise.
"Mew!"
I gasped again. "You're so cute! Oh, you're so pretty!"
I sat down with my back against the door to try and encourage it over. The little puffball marched right over and put its front paws in my lap. I started to stroke the tiny cat, first lightly then more firmly. I spotted a little glimpse of blue amongst its pure white fur and lightly lifted its head. "What are you wearing, beautiful? What's this?" I leant down and read 'Lola', from her collar, spelled out in little rhinestones. "Aww, what a beautiful girl! That's such a pretty name, hiiii!" I smooched over Lola for quite a while, until she wandered away and curled up in a little woven basket. "Aww darling, you need a rest. Okay sweetie, I'll leave you be now." I blew her a little kiss and went back inside, feeling much more cheerful. I think I like it here, actually.
